Sounds like OP had a fuel problem.
My daughter was using my '85 300D quite a while ago. She had a similar problem - no power. She took car into a shop I knew in Toronto. She got the car back running perfectly in about1/2hr. He charged her $50! From what I could gather, he just lubed the linkages. Likely the ones covered here:
