OM617 Timing using clamp on meter?

Hey guys..

So I finally got my 300SD running decent after rebuilding the injectors and swapping the injection pump.

Being the first time I've used a "drip" timing method, I'm pretty sure it isn't spot on. I THINK I've got it a bit on the retarded side as there isn't much "rattle" at idle like most 617s and a consistent grey/white haze.

It starts super easy and shuts down firm. Doesn't appear to be burning oil or coolant.

I've got a clamp on style timing meter that I typically use on my IH engines and would like to use it on the 617 to verify timing. I'm sure the spec isn't the same since it is a different method.

Does anyone know what the timing should be set to when using a clamp on style "pulse" timing meter?

Is there any way to verify that the timing is exact or close to it? Should I just advance it a bit and see if the haze goes away?

Found a thread that says dynamic timing at 1000rpm should be 19 BTDC +/- 1.5

At idle ~ 15 BTDC using a piezo clamp timing meter.

Can anyone verify that?

From what I have read you need to set the timing as in the Factory Service Manual then you clamp on your device and record what you get at idle. Then that gives you a standard figure to use for the next time.

The timing device mentioned is best used if you have several of the same vehicles. Why, because the pulse is different for different vehicles. What works on your Mercedes is going to be different from another Diesel.

If I am wrong let me know.

I bought one of those clamp on devices to run on my old strobe light.

I used the old spec mentioned in the thread mentioned above. Seemed to work.

I have two OM617 cars so it made sense. I also hate drip and bubble timing.

Here is the thread I used. You guys are the best!

First I used the drip method for timing and the air (bubble) method. Air seemed more accurate. Then read about the clamp on pulse which measures the actual timing.

I was able to buy at a good price, a Snap On MT257B diesel pulse adapter which works with an old school strobe timing light.

Set my '83 turbo actual timing to 13° BTDC at idle. I was running late timing with drip and bubble methods.

Searched this site for "piezo timing" found this;

"Brian Carlton 01-23-2006 | 04:19 PM

I got the correlation.

I took the SD over to Dieselnut14's place over in Sea Cliff.

The SD is set perfectly at 15° ATDC using the RIV device.

The pulse timing device showed 13.5° BTDC.

At the NJ GTG, he measured six different vehicles, all with 616 and 617 engines. The highest reading was 12° and the lowest was 6°. Clearly, everyone was running with late timing.

So, my best estimate of the proper timing with the pulse device is just about 14° BTDC."

Thanks for the input guys. I'll check it out here in a few days. We have apparently misplaced the clamp for the meter so we need to order one.

The clamp we use is adjustable and fits on all of our mechanical diesels. We've had the meter for a while and figured it was worth a shot to try it on the 617.

Once the new clamp comes it, I'll try it out and see where we are at.

Did you ever get needed parts to complete your IP Light timing tools?

Would love to rent one. The fella here listed for renting one from has not been on this site in 11years

though not relevant here....... I've got CAT tools to rent for injector timing on 311x engines.
