Clutch pedal lube point?
Noticed a creak while depressing the clutch pedal. Observed while parked in the driveway, engine off.
Is there a point on the pedal assembly that requires periodic lubrication? Or is this perhaps a separate issue... -

I don't like squeaks either! Nor rattles.
The pedal has a bushed tube that rides on a pin that's part of the whole pedal assembly. It's held on with a circlip. If this is the source of the squeak you will have to take it apart and clean/lube it. The master cylinder and spring will need to be disconnected from the pedal. It seems possible that you could do this without removing the entire pedal assembly from the vehicle. But before doing that, you might stick your head down there and push on the pedal to see if you can hear exactly where the squeak is coming from. Could be something else, like where the master cylinder attaches, or something in the spring assembly.

It feels like it's happening at a pivot point. It's been a while since I've had to do anything with the master cylinder (last replaced push rod). Doesn't seem like there's anything within that mechanism that would make noise, or is there? Possibly where the pushrod mounts to the pedal... I can't remember if that eccentric/bushing spins freely.

I sprayed some LPS 2 (penetrating spray lubricant) on the ends of the pivot shaft, and that did stop a squeak. Pedal felt nicer too. Disassembly would be best, but you might get by with a spray lube for a while.
Also check the clutch switch. Set parking brake (so it doesn't roll), then with the clutch pedal depressed, find the switch button and press it checking for squeaks. Mine was very noisy, took it off and used Deoxit fader/tuner cleaner and lubricant (any potentiometer or electronic cleaner and lubricant should be fine) on the plunger shaft, you can't really spray in the switch very well, so it's a bit messy. Work that a bunch of times to get the lube in there as best you can, you'll hear it getting quieter. Clutch pedal felt and sounded much better after that, easy enough tasks except getting your head under the dash to see what to do. |

LPS 2 is thinner than white lithium spray grease, but thicker than WD40. Either would work in this case I think, most anything slippery with capillary action will work it's way into the pivot shaft enough to be some help.
The LPS 2 gets applied to plane pivot points annually, I figure I'll probably get a few or even several years of occasional spray lube being sufficient before taking it apart to properly clean. |
