All the newer diesels I've seen in local listings sell quickly if they aren't priced through the roof.
Fuel cost comparisons need to be done with Premium vs Diesel. ALL MB gassers have required this for a long time, and now even a lot of other vehicles do also. Today I fueled my Metris from empty and my GLK from nearly empty..... Metris covered 363 miles on 17.1 gallons....21.22 mpg....fuel was $3.10/gal GLK covered 334 miles on 11.7 gallons....28.54mpg....fuel was $2.90/gal (85% city driving in cold weather)...all freeway I can easily move into the 35+mpg range These prices are the closest they've been around here in a long time, normally the spread is nearly 50-60 cents between diesel and premium (and probably will be again eventually) Metris: $53.01 to fuel GLK: $33.93 to fuel $20 cheaper on a single fuel up....covering almost the same distance. The real comparison is vs my 420SEL I used to drive the majority of the time, or my 2001 E320, both of which struggled to make 17+mpg consistently, especially in city driving.... Vs those cars the diesel saves in excess of $1,200 on fuel a year (I drive 13k+ miles a year) while being much more fun/safe/capable/pleasant to drive. Even if I have to by a couple grand in emissions equipment every 70-80k miles.....who cares. Chances are electric cars will really start taking over in the next 3-5 years....and then I'll probably move on from internal combustion.
