'83 W123 Transmission Flair
I recently serviced my '83 300CD's transmission and now have a problem. Would like your expert thoughts...
I've had her a year and before I bought it had a indy shop check it out. Report was good so I had shop change tranny filter and fluid while it was there. He did not drain the torque converter, I don't know what brand of fluid was used but was Dexron 6. Car shifted beautifully but when hot would have a second and a half delay going into drive from reverse. Last week I drained the fluid and converter, new filter and changed the fluid to Redline D4. I also changed the K1 spring to the lastest 'improved' version. I don't drive it in the winter but last year took it out when below freezing and noticed a slight 2/3 flair when stone cold. After changing fluid to Redline and new K1 spring car immediatly has a 3/4 flair under normal acceleration, not when babied or hard throttle. It never 3/4 flaired before. When hot car no longer has delay going into drive from reverse or park. Could the 3/4 flair be caused by the Redline D4 fluid, K1 change or both? Can not find info on K2 spring part number. I'd like to put a new one in. Some posts have said K1 spring works in the K2 position. I would really appreciate your experience and thoughts with this situation. |

One of the things is what a Old Guy told me when I was growing up. He said if you change 2 or more things when you are fixing something you won't know which single one of the fixed the problem.
You might measure the exposed threads on the Bodwen Cable adjustment (so you can return it back if your re-adjustment does not work) and try adjusting it to see if it can be of benefit. You can also adjust the vacuum coming from the vacuum valve on the Fuel Injection Pump but it is better if you read the manual on both of those or at least find some threads on that. Also look up similar transmission issues. Repair Links Fast navigation Fast navigation Do It Yourself Links

Problem Solved
Thank you Diesel911 for responding. You are absolutely right about changing 2 or more things at once, I considered just changing the fluid and doing the K1 spring another time to see if the Redline D4 would make a difference on it’s own regarding the delay into drive. I could not overcome the urge to do both at the same time because I had it on my friends lift – what a joy to stand up under the car!
I did double check the Bowden Cable adjustment. Popped off the socket and it’s perfectly centered with no cable tension or slack above the male part. This morning I found the problem!!! The Bowden Cable female end socket mounts to a plate with the male part that pivots with the throttle linkage. That independent plate slipped off it’s ‘stop’ on the plate below it pivots with. So when you gave it throttle it did not move or pull the cable at all. Hard to visualize unless you look at the mechanism and give it throttle. I focused on the cable adjustment but could not see the problem until I gave it throttle and saw no movement of the cable. When I did the trans I also adjusted the valves (after installing a new head from Metric Motors). The bowden linkage must have been disturbed by the valve cover R&R. The car now shifts like a dream. The thicker Redline trans fluid compared to Dexron VI also cured the hot 1.5 second delay going into drive from reverse. Still can't find info on the K2 spring... |
