Life span of Bosch diesel injectors for 617 engine?
I'm in the market to replace the injectors on the 1984 300DT. I have three choices:
1. Local diesel shop can check the pop pressure/operation of injectors I purchsed off Ebay. 2. Purchase new Bosch injectors (most likely made in India). 3. Purchse Delphi remanufactured injectors which come with a one year twelve month warranty. This option requires the posting of a core charge..... Question; how many cycles/years are Bosch injectors good for? |

The OEM Bosch injectors were good for ~100K miles if you kept the fuel system clean. They'll last longer than that, but the spray pattern suffers. It isn't uncommon to see 150-200K on the original nozzles that seem "fine" until you see how the car runs after they're rebuilt.
The Bosch "India" injectors are good for 5 startups or 25 feet, whichever is shorter. Seriously, just stay away. Send your injectors off to Mark (Greazzer on this forum) and have the injectors rebuilt with Bosio or Monark nozzles.

I'm afraid Greazzer has abandoned the injector business. He told me that the 100k miles lifetime is true for the nozzles.
Your injector bodies are probably o.k. In my case, I bought Bosio nozzles and took them to a Diesel engine shop for cleaning and setting. Been working fine for 40k miles so far. It is true that the difference in performance was startling. |

Greazzer relaunched his business this past fall. He has a website here:

Depends on the maintenNce and fuel quality. Mine are good at 212k. I get excellent fuel economy and minimal smoke. Although I'm sure they aren't exactly in spec, I have no good reason yet to pull them.
Most nozzles are recommended for TESTING and service at 100k, the service depending upon the results of the test. Greaazer I will go to when the time is necessary.

I purchased new monarks and had them installed by a local authorized bosch diesel repair shop. Today, I'm cleaning them up and will reinstall them in the car and do an audio recording so I can post it here on the forum.
The monarks NAIL really really BAD in this 617. Kent over at mercedes source now says that sometimes the injector bodies are non-rebuildable. I believe he also says that monarks are somewhat nosier....I dunno, all I know is they are too LOUD for my taste. They nailed so bad I finally pulled them out and replaced them with some bosch injectors I purchased off Ebay. Things have been much quieter ever since.... |

Never heard and never had non rebuildable nozzle holders unless they broke, e.g, broken barb nipple, threads gouged up, or lower half of the body had a hair line crack so you had leaks in the middle. The intermediate disc can be "lapped" which just means a super fine sanding which is about the same as polishing. If you see rings like a bullseye, it's done for. In over 1,000s of injectors, I've only seen 2 broken springs. Otherwise, I suspect they can be rebuilt over and over.
How long did you let them break in? It takes 200 to 500 miles to get rid of the 'chatter' |

It has been awhile back but IIRC, they were in the car about 1 - 2 months. I only drive the car about 40 - 50 miles per day. Perhaps I should reinstall the monarks and give it a go? |

Perhaps the timing is off which is causing the car to nail with the Monarks?

I can be a dummy at times. About 2 or 3 weeks ago, I had a customer with a set for a OM606 with "Monarks". 5 out of 6 had really sticky pintles so he was better off going with his original, French made nozzles. There was something wrong with his nozzles. I have seen unusual markings on the side of so-called Monarks. If you have 3 or 4 lines //// (horrible representation so my bad) which I assume is supposed to represent spraying, I think those are Chinese knockoffs but are being passed off as Monarks. I see those on Alibaba now, and could have gotten something really similar for around .50 or .60 cents a nozzle. I forgot the details but they were super cheap. If you have a minutes, can you shoot me a picture of your new Monarks?

Yes I've also seen a Chinese knockoff of monarchs on eBay before.

I meant the nozzles. Do you recall if they had a logo or not?

Sorry, no, I don't remember. I've had them several years; after they didn't quiet down I took them out of the car. I have to do something because I suspect injectors, timing and ALDA are causing excessive wear on the motor mounts. |
