Round two @ Super Car Sunday

We drove to Woodland Hills and participated in the Super Car Sunday event. There were hundreds of cars of every make and model imaginable. About a dozen showed up from the Three Point Social Club. We also had a visit from some guy (a friend of Blue) named Jason or James, or something like that. My brother and I got a photo with him. A good time was had by all.......Rich

UPDATE: Sad news (for the engine)

Blue was delivering a vintage motorcycle to a guy in Idaho, when right in the middle of nowhere (yes, it was the most desolate place he has been), the engine lost power and puked at least a gallon of black oil on the road, in the engine bay, and on the motorcycle and trailer. The car has over 557,000 miles on it now. He was able to get in touch with the guy in Idaho, and he came and got the motorcycle and trailer (100+ miles). A tow truck came from the other direction (another 100+ miles) to get the car, and bring it to the guys house. The next day, Blue borrowed a truck and got a U-Haul to tow the car back to my place. He then borrowed my 240, and put it on the trailer so he would have a way to get back to Oregon after returning the truck and trailer. After many hours and stops to fix the fuel system (changing filters, switching hoses) on the 240, he made it home safe. I now have the task of removing the engine and rebuilding it. The last photo below shows the oil on the engine. Thankfully, he took the car to the coin-op car wash and cleaned the engine and bay before delivering the car.

I thought I would pulled the head first, just in case the problem was with the head, and the bottom end not damaged. I got the head pulled today, and found some bad scoring on #4 cylinder. Both #3&4 are oil soaked, so I imagine both are damaged. I had to rig up something to keep the timing chain from balling up, so I came up with a block of wood and a cardboard tube (photo below). It worked very well, as I had to remove the six torque converter bolts after the head was off. I plan to pull the engine tomorrow, and then Blue is going to come and get the car so the engine bay can be cleaned and painted. At a later date, he plans to take the car apart to do a proper paint job. I will post photos and the progress of the rebuild.......Rich

It would have been very easy to just drop in a replacement used engine, but he wants the original engine to be rebuilt. I totally get it......Rich

More photos

Blue sent me some more photos of the trip. The place where the engine gave up, the tow truck, the motorcycle, and the wagon on the U-Haul.

Thumbs up America The Beautiful

Wow, that's pretty and reminds me it's been a while since I'v driven across America, maybe two years now .

I'm not surprised to see he was hauling an old BMW R60/2, he had one or two in his house the time I visited .

? Is Idaho considered the Plains ? . (sorry if this is a stupid question) .

This is a great story. I love that wagon. I secretly wish I had a wagon instead of a sedan.

"I secretly wish I had a wagon instead of a sedan"

WISH GRANTED ~ $2,000 column shift European Diesel wagon in Los Angles, buy it and drive it home ......

No one actually wants a wagon, they just say they do .

I posted it in the classifieds, so far not one spark of interest .

I just emailed the seller about it. I'd trade my W116 for a W123 wagon if it was the right one, but I'm picturing a sunroof, roof rack, and third row seat. The column shift sounds really neat, though. I don't have any real income right now, so I'd have to sell my car first and am so afraid of taking a bath on it and then not being able to afford anything decent.

The Brauner Benz is in no shape to drive, and as Blue told me about it: " I would need back surgery after driving it much more". He is still driving my 240, and will probably have put 5,000 + miles on it before it is returned. He has put 3,000 miles on it in less than a week. He drove it from Medford OR to Las Vegas NV the other day, and just this morning left LV and drove to the bay area, and will arrive in Medford tonight. This guy has had more seat time in a 'Benz, than some truckers get in their entire career (well that may be a little exaggeration, but you get the point).....Rich
