Ugh - everything is wrong with the description of that photo, which has been rippling through the internet for years mistakenly labeled. That is not a Wartsila RTA 96C engine, in fact it is an MAN engine, a competitor to Wartsila. It is nowhere near as large as the record holding 14 cylinder Wartsila RTFlex 96C, described here:
Largest marine engine | Guinness World Records The engine in that photo is FAR smaller than a 96C. Modern state of the art two stroke engines use exhaust valves because the engine is more efficient as compared to traditional 2 stroke cylinder ports.
