Transmission Pan Magnets

Of the cars I own, the only tranny pan I've seen inside of is the 722.4 on my 91. It does not have a magnet. From what I've read, the 722.6 on my 98 does not have a magnet but the 722.6 on my 06 does....don't know whether this is correct or not.

If a pan does not have a magnet, is it advisable to drop one (or two) in there?

If a pan has a magnet, does it ever need to be replaced?

My only immediate concern is the tranny service I'll be doing on my friend's 89 190D....wondering if I should drop a magnet in there.

I wonder if 000 988 01 52 will get the job done on any MB pan.

It wouldn't hurt to have a magnet. But I wouldn't "drop it in the pan". If it came loose by friction or vibration, you never know where it would end up. It would actually be fine if you simply stuck a strong neodymium magnet on the outside of the pan. If it came loose, you'd lose it, but it would do no harm. And it would be just as effective.

I was wondering about that but didn't know if the magnetism would be strong enough.

The only concern I can see is if the trans is electronically controlled. How close can a magnet be to the electronics and how sensitive are the electronics to magnetism? I just don't know, not being an electron kind of guy. Just a question to ask. But I agree that a strong magnet on the outside of a steel pan ought to do the job of gathering up filings.

In pan magnets don't walk around, none are glued to the pan.

GM uses a 1 1/2" square 1/8" thick magnet stuck to the inside of the pan. There are 2 corners of the pan with slightly raised areas but this is to show proper location. Some cars use a 1 1/2" diameter 3/16" thick ceramic doughnut magnet.

For placement in a non mag trans, I'd keep it away from the filter inlet but I'd have to look at a few trans to see their strategy. Having a magnet on the outside would be fine as long as it does not get scraped off.

The magnets don't wear out, wiping them off is the only maint required.

I'm not sure why the .6 does not have a magnet. Shift solenoids make for great magnets so I'm wondering of the shape of the conductor plate allows for collection of metal even after the solenoid is off.

I'd say that these days, having a magnet is more of a long term benefit than a new build material collector because trans parts are cleaned much better than in the past.

I agree, a magnet will not walk or move around once it is stuck to the steel pan.

A magnet out of a Hard Drive would be a good one to use. They have an incredible pull.

I was hoping someone would post this, I added one to my 87 300D years ago. No good way to tell whether or not its adding to the life of the transmission, but it isn't going to hurt. They are like $4.

I will order one up and toss it in my CDI at the next oil change.

Get the GM one from a dealer - the updated donut style. Costs less than 10 dollars.
