I had in 2003 a 3780 ft2 for $196k, $51/ft2, in Mansfield (SE Tarrant Co). But it was built like a cardboard box and monkeys could have done a better job wiring it. Looked pretty on the inside, lots of fancy molding work and fairly high end kitchen, but what a joke otherwise. The craziest thing was my escrow payment was higher than my P&I. Property tax was $6k/yr and insurance about $3k/yr.

This was in Portland, OR where we bought a home for $40,000 in 1980, but we looked at homes in the area for as little as 24,000. Don
