Hub Caps

Does anybody know where to get the stock hub caps for an 82 240D? Reproductions will work but I would like originals.

Were rims without hub caps an option? Only wondering if I need different rims that will accept hub caps. The computer im using has allot of restrictions so I cant post a picture of my rims

An '82 240D likely came from the factory with the light aluminum rims (look like steelies) and hubcaps. This is what those rims look like without hubcaps:

The 300D of that era more likely had the "bundt cake" alloys rims:

After more than 3 decades, wheels can and do get swapped. Personally, I prefer the bundt cake alloys and run them on my cars.

I have the alloys but I have one of the aluminum rims as a spare in the trunk. I don't mind the alloy rims I just think the hub caps bring the look o the car together and give it that classy look.

If you have Bundts you will need to buy steel wheels to fit hubcaps. You cannot run a hub cap over the Bundt wheel.

That hubcap came on all kinds of benzes from around 1968 to 1985 so they are pretty easy to come by.

I have a set of 4 hub caps that I can sell you for $10 plus shipping. You will need to strip and repaint them. Send me a PM if interested.

Most likely your car originally had wheels like your spare and someone swapped them out for the bundt cake alloys. I've done that, but I've always been able to swap out for a set of five.

On the off chance you do switch back to the light aluminum rims (they are expensive and getting hard to find), you'll need the proper shorter lug bolts. In fact, I'm not 100% sure you can even use your current spare tire with the longer bundt cake lug bolts.

Don`t know if new Hub Caps or Wheel Covers are still available new from the dealer.
If they are...dig deep in your pockets.

Your best bet is finding them used. You may have to search for one`s w/o curb rash,
and they may not all be your color.

There were two type of wheels MB used. the stamped steel and the stamped aluminum wheel.

The aluminum came in 5 1/2 and 6 inch wide. 5 1/2 will have a broken silver stripe around the center.
and the 6 inch will have a solid silver stripe which are rare.
The aluminum wheel was only sold on north America mkt.

The steel wheel is about 18 lbs and aluminum is about 9 1/5 lbs.

Here is a Pagoda Forum talking about the wheels and part #

Pagoda SL Group Technical Manual :: WheelsTires / Alloys

As per one of my 240D steel wheels part# 123-400-03-02

There is two different type of Wheel Cover clips.
One for the Steel Wheels part# 123-400-00-28
One for the Alum Wheels part# 123-400-00-27

The difference is the one for the Alumn wheel has a Teflon pad to protect
the Alumn from be gouged by the steel clip.

Here is a E-bay listing for Wheel Covers.
Mercedes Benz 220 230 280 300 450 500 Hubcap Wheel Cover Hub Cap 14" 57002 Set | eBay

Hit the yards for them also. I have found them here and there on my searches.
Finding good one`s is the challenge.

Hope some of this info helps.

You can use the longer Lug Bolt with the Light Alloy stamped wheel on the fronts.

You need the short bolt on the rear, If the longer bolt is used, it will catch
the parking brake assy and tear it up. No experience, just what I read.

I hadn't read as much, but that's what I surmised in regard to the rear. Good to know about the fronts, though.

I bought the stencil set-up at a swap meet, never used. They are around.

Or you can use masking tape
