Lightbulb OM617 Wastegate Adjustment Garrett Video

Hey Gang, I was adjusting the wastegate on the Garrett, and I figured I would shoot a vid to dispel the myth that the spring is hard to remove.

(This is for you Funola; you've earned a lot of board Karma!)

Really it is way more difficult to put back on than remove! Enjoy!

(The tool I used is a probe from a set of 4 at the Harborage of Freight that cost ~$3; the angles on it are pretty perfect for this task.)

You make me look like a klutz! lol How did you get a camera in there? As I recall, it was really tight on my 83. My tang was at 12 o'clock , not 9 o'clock like yours so I couldn't see what I was doing. I made various picks and they kept slipping off when I try to hook the tang.

What's the p/n of those HF picks? My 85 has the KKK, much easier to adjust.

Well, it's not as tough since it's in an FJ, and everything is much easier to get to! (I just had the old school digital camera leaning against the battery box; you have to be real steady when you first push the focus/start button!)

I also figured I'd make the vid as I had already had the thing on and off a handful of times; so I had already done plenty of klutzing! It also wasn't the only take... (And putting that thing back on can take a little patience...)

On a related note... I have been adjusting boost, a turn at a time and then driving to test (I did two turns initially).

Now I am maxed at 10-11psi, I would like to see 12-13.5 psi. Is this a weak spring? Some folks use a "manual" boost controller (read ball valve); which is fine for lower mass, but I think it would cause surging with a large vehicle on the freeway. What do you guys think?

Does anyone know if the spring is still available?

thanks for posting! i mine was a pain when i did it. with the layer of grease and dirt it was hard to find the "tang" to pick out. it is also kinda hard to get back in. i bent the tang out a little so it is easier to catch on in the future. properly adjusting is much safer and works better than those in line boost controllers in my opinion!

Good bet it's a weak spring. You can shim it or get a new spring (I never tried). I'd think a new spring should be available from Garette.

Do you know if the rear cover needs to be removed; or just remove front cover and front face to access the spring and possibly throw in a shim?

IDK since I never considered shimming or replacing the spring. I was happy with 11 psi.

Cadin, the front plate should come off after removing the adjusting and lock nuts from the shaft. I took the easy route (plus I'm all about reverting to stock) with my wastegate adjustment and did the ball valve method. You said you were worried about surge on your FJ at high speed and though I can't comment on the characteristics of the MBC on a truck, I can tell you that after 6 months I havent had a surge yet. I have a boost gauge and the MBC is set to 12.5 PSI. I also noticed the the spring rate is stiffer than the wastegate spring so it shoots up faster. Either way, you'll notice a tiny gain in power until you start massaging that pump.

That seems to be the consensus; but what exactly to manipulate seems to be the unknown variable. What is your definition of tweaking the pump? The ALDA is dialed out; and I have maybe 1.5 turns on the full load screw on the IP. I was tempted to play with the torque capsule/idle and do the full teeter-totter parade to gain some mid-range torque, but most folks seemed to thing the gain wasn't worth the risk.

Guess I'll wait for Tomnik's MW pump element majicks to be complete...

Good to know about the surge, Thankee.
