I replaced the clutch on the 5-spd in the former car several years ago. It was suffering from a broken pressure plate, which I've never seen before. While I was at it, I replaced the slave cylinder and (I think) the throw-out bearing. I'm pretty sure that all the parts were different from the 4-spd. It took a couple of weeks to get the parts, from a supplier in the midwest, but I can't remember who...

I 've replaced T/O bearings, discs, pressure plates, slaves and master cylinders in both four and five speed W123 trannys and they have used the same parts. That is taking into account for the differences between "early' and "late" slaves and T/O bearings which apply to both 5 a 4 speed boxs.

I'm preparing to switch the Otto-matic out of my 1985 300 turbo, and swap for a manual out of a retired euro-market 300d NA. The manual is a 5 speed, the plate says "Teil nr. 123-260-2001 aggregate /80 024 716. This transmission has 200k miles on it, but works fine. It does have an odd fault. Engine running, in neutral, with clutch engaged, the transmission makes a "clanking" noise, sort of like the sound that a bad throw-out bearing would make when the clutch was disengaged. I've been told that this is a problem with a layshaft (for reverse gear?), the layshaft runs in bushings in the case, and get end play and make the noise. That's what I've been told, anyway. Some people say it's not a problem, others that it will cause trans failure, either way it's not a nice noise.
So, does anyone know about this problem? Is it easy to fix? I've heard about re-bushing, or boring a larger hole and installing a ball bearing. Do you know of anyone who works on these, or where parts are available. I'm in Maine.
I've been told that this is the same transmission as was found in some 280E gasoline cars of the same age. Was it ever imported to the US by Mercedes, and do they have parts for it? Lots of questions.
Thanks very much in advance for any feedback or advice.

Its all bearings dude. NO bushings. The repair manual for the 716.210 4 speed says pay special attention to the rear bearing on the counter shaft. Its small and must wear out a lot.

There are bushings. Its specifically called a bearing bushing, which has no rollers. There are also taper bearings, roller bearings and needle bearings. There are more than two bearing bushings in the 717.400 IIRC. I will get the manual out if you insist.

post the pdfs

I'd bet all "live" components ie those that spin directly adjacent to one another have bearings. There may be an inner race they refer to as a bushing pressed on to the shaft but not "live". Mercedes doesn't do that. Everything that moves has bearings. Not so with american trannys. They have bushings where mercedes and volvo have needle bearings.

Your right.

I see the bearing bushings are right next to the bearings in my diagram. It is from the 717.400 parts blow up from the dealer. I have the shop manual PDF as well. it looks like the needle bearing runs on the bushing. I don't have time to post anything pdf right now. possibly later.
