Seat belts are your friend. Much better than any chain I ever used.

Walter,

Good work, yeah I think it was 5 + hours for me too getting the dang thing out. I bring my Engine Tilter with me if Iam going to pull the Eng/Trans together. But if Iam going to just lift out the Engine, then the Seat belts work good.

I usually forget to being a Hack Saw, But if I do, then just cut the radiator support and you don`t have to lift so high. Don`t use HF Chicom Hack Saw blades. went through 3 or 4, the sheet metal just knocked off the teeth. Big surprise.

If you are going to just take the Engine, remember to remove the TORQUE CONVERTOR BOLTS first. There are 6 of them in three groups. Remove the plastic cover ( metal cover in this 240 eng I pulled) and rotate the engine till they show up in the opening. They are 13mm bolts, and not all that tight. If you for get, then it is a PITA when they are holding you up and it won`t separate.

NOTE: this is with the automatic transmissions, Manual gear Boxes do not have these bolts.

Ever been to the Sherwood PNP? That yard has rocks the size of Tennis Balls to walk on, dang near break your Ankle. then I don`t know how ya would ever push the "A" Frame over these rocks and holes, and up that long hill to the office.

Well Iam 70, so I can still keep up with you on pulling these engines.

I`ll be in the PNW first week in May (Portland) maybe we can meet up.
I would like to meet STEVO on one of these trips, think he is 3 + hours north in Wash. I know I`ll see GASTROPODUS for sure.
There are quite a few Forum members in the Portland area.

Good morning Richard. Seat Belts really do work well, It`s just finding some bolts and nuts that are the same size. seems like there bolts, but think a lot of the nuts are welded to the brackets they hold secure.

The front seat belt has a larger hole, than the rears where it connects to the body. I found a Lug Bolt and a Lug Nut that fit perfect and used it for the front lift point.

Give the belts a couple over hand knots, and when the pressure is on them, they really tighten down on the Hook.

Seats belts are $14.99 each, cut off one`s are free.

Good job Charlie! It's always a tough job away from home. I pulled a 617 out of a 80 SD about four years ago. It wasn't a P&P so the rules were, do what you have to, to get it out of there. They wanted the car baled because they didn't have a title. I had my boy Danny helping me, but it was a job on a boiling August PM and I was probably 77 at that time. I'll never get that much work done again. I do have the 617 for sale if anyone is interested. It's all there and I started it without glow plugs before I pulled it.

[QUOTE=DeliveryValve;3320683]Dang Charlie, you got to be in the double digits on having engines laying around on the property by now! Nice job in saving that motor. I am trying to figure out where I could stash another I found. Got any room? Heheh

Dang you are posting faster than I can read or type.

You need to move to a bigger place with room. Yeah Iam working hard to stay ahead of you.

This is my first OM616, been looking for one for a spare. this is the first 80 240 I have seen in a while. This one is UKN miles, so we`ll see what we have later on. Well with summer coming on it can sit outside covered up. but next winter? we`ll be scrambling to find an inside place for it.

Been looking in Nevada for a place with a shop. This place we are on is on the market. Did see one place on 1.3 acre with a steel building that was first listed for $249K, dropped to $229 and sold for $215K.
Hate to think what that would cost here in Kali land.

You are right the seat belt tightens nicely when the knot has a load on it. That is why I never use any bolts. The only other thing I use is a vice grip to clamp down the position of the belt to level the engine and trans combo. Here are pics of my engine install on a Beemer while using a seatbelt.

I only use seatbelts for in the field removal. At home I use a proper chain or strap.

Charlie, Tin snips are your friend. Works better than a hack saw on the w123 radiator support.

Ah proper shmopper! I have that too including a load leveler. But the chains will f'up those plastic pieces so I opted to use the seat belt in this instance.

Charlie,

I would be delighted to meet up with you, but does not look like it might be in the cards for me at this time. What are the dates you will be in Portland?

Hope I still have the ability, much less the inclination to pull engines by myself when I am 70!

I have not been in any junk yards in Portland, I a quite a ways east of there.

Regards,

W.
