Moving from Phoenix to Buffalo...

...in a few weeks and have been slowly weather proofing my '76 240D. I've replaced the windshield seal, tail light seals, trunk seal and the previous owner(s) replaced the rear window seal. I'd like to scrape down the interior of the trunk this weekend and apply a brush-on rubberized black sealant over the surface rust that has built up from a previously leaky rear window. Any recommendations for a product? Maybe one specifically for rust prevention/sealing? Thanks - Mike

76 = W115, no? I hear it's tough to keep a W115 from rusting. I'd invest in a beater for the salt season. Old Subaru's have their plusses in this regard.

Yeah, the salt used on the roads in that corner of the world are staggering. New cars would rust in a few short years

Look at the bright side: at least you will only be catching the very tail end of the worst (coldest) winter, ever. If you had rolled in two weeks ago... yikes what a shock that would have been.

I wouldn't worry so much about undercoating/rust inhibition right now as making sure your glow system, alternator and battery are all in top shape.

Even if you arrive in early April, the forecasts are calling for sub-normal temperatures right into May, so that may mean some unusually cold nights. And I am assuming your car probably doesn't have a block heater.

I applaud your forethought with the window seals.

Good luck with the move.

On the plus side, low rent, good food and 4AM last call. I can show you around. Frank and Theresa's Anchor Bar is where Buffalo wings come from, an attraction for flesh-eaters.

Install pencil-style plugs for the non-salt months that are in the 40's, and put a beater jar on the counter. Fill it with $500-$2000 by thanksgiving. Salt season is usually mid-december to end of february, but this winter has been the ball-buster that balances out a few creampuff winters from recent memory.

Why would you want to move into that part of the world? Phoenix gets to 115+ deg in the summer, but at least the Government isn`t trying to destroy your car with Salt.

I would use the POR products to seal the rusted areas. If the rust is coming from the other side too, then do that side also.

115+ degrees is exactly why I am moving out of Phoenix. Well, that and the rampant amount of douche bags. Born/raised in Phoenix, but went to boarding school in NH and college in Buffalo. I miss the WNY area. The snow doesn't bother me at all. I don't intend to drive the 240D past say... October? Then I'll get a beater or something decent as a winter/everyday car. I just want to prep the old girl as much as I can for wet weather since it almost never rains here in Phoenix. The trunk has been the biggest pain for sure to seal, especially the tail lights. I just wanna seal up that rust in the trunk floor before it's exposed to persistent humidity and moisture. I can't wait to drive it around the Elmwood village though. The hipsters will go nuts. :-P

Welcome back to WNY

I'm 90 miles down the road in Rochester...perhaps we should have a GTG to celebrate Spring!

x2 on the POR 15 product

The usual cold weather items apply...my magic was switching over to full synthetic which resulted in relatively easy starts at -12 a number of mornings this year. That coupled with a good valve adjustment, strong battery and for really cold days make certain your block heater works if you have one.

Yeah, the salt sucks on the roads around here but there are plenty of car washed to keep it rinsed. I drive mine year 'round. I learned to drive with a rear wheel drive...the fun never stops!

POR-15. The rubber will just allow the rust to fester underneath and eventually explode in your face .

Shame, you're not coming quite far enough out east for me to say hi .

@uberwgn: It takes at least 10 years here to have any rust-through. And that's if you don't wash the car regularly. Wash it regularly and keep water out of the interior and it'll go decades before serious work is needed.

I would rather move to the northern part of California or to Oregon...

With the way nature is going, no way I would move to Buffalo.....Some great predictors are saying that soon Arizona will have beach front properties...

Nevada, Northern Nv.) it`s dry heat in the summer, nothing like Phoenix. And a dry cold in the winter. Not too much snow, usually gone in a day or so. No leaves to rake. and not a lot of people.

Oregon is too wet and cold. My daughter lives up there. she has Moss growing on her north side.

Congrats Buffalo is a good town, blue collar and down to earth. The food is excellent too, anything with blue cheese and Red Hot is okay by me.
x2 on a subbie! They're very popular in Western NY.
76' 240d one wheel squeel rwd correct? Eek you'd be a brave man to drive that around in any kind of snow, although you would look quite stylish

I was up in OR w/ my dad for a week one april, I think. It was amazing. Neskowin, Lincoln city, the coast road, mountains, Eugene w/ every shade of green, high desert, wiley coyote land and the Columbia river gorge. I did enjoy it quite a bit.

Nova Scotia is somewhat breathtaking as well.

With good tires a W123 is alright in the snow and slush. Beats a lot of the lighter, low to ground offerings w/ wide tires available these days. Besides, you can swing around a corner like it's hill street blues. Try that in a front wheel drive.
