Ok following the question I posed in post #2 on this thread I have been hanging back to see how others would respond, as I dislike posing nasty possibilities before other avenues have been explored.

The smell of unburned diesel worries me, combined with the smoke, in light of his damaged prechambers. The destroyed prechamber bits had to go somewhere.

I would be concerned about damage to the piston(s) on the cylinders where the prechambers were destroyed, OR maybe that some event occurred that caused the prechamber damage and holed a piston in the process.

My evidence: I bought a 240d that ran poorly and smoked white-ish, but had decent power, so I messed around with the entire page of snake-oil for neglected diesels before we pulled the head, and: a holed piston.

Right now you need a decent, working diesel compression tester, if you wish to prove me wrong....

I will let another answer how to test the oil seals in-situ since I have never taken a turbocharger apart. I would guess there is some test you could do with air pressure on the oil ports, or some way to discern there has been a leak (like oil streaks).

Play indicates worn bearings. I would think that play in the shaft would normally lead to leaking oil seals, but the converse is not true. You could have leaking oil seals with good bearings (no play).

Follow up on zacharius's suggestion. You don't require a compression tester. Remove all glow plugs and feel for compression pressure on each cylinder as you crank. If a hole in the piston, you will feel nothing. A good cylinder will force your finger from the hole, unless you can hold back 400 psi.

Compression tester

Further to the 0 readings from that tester.... Did the screw-in adapter come as one piece or two?

Some (all?) testers also require a spacer to be inserted into the Mercedes GP hole before the adapter is screwed in. If you don't use the spacer, you may get a zero reading.

Ok I have solved the problem, its was user error with marvel mystery oil... So after I replaced prechambers iris the mmo soak...but I never ran the car for more then 10 min do to the insane amount of smoke.... Phew as for the compression check the gauge had a faulty o- ring by the pressure release valve... I greatly appreciate the input of all, and am very excited by joining this forum. Pics of my carwill be uploaded as soon as I can get my cellphone to uplot them. And zacharius I did not put the sleve on the first cylinder I did the compression test on and didn't remove the heat sheild... And almost had to fish the broken heat sheild out... I solved the issue today immediately after I said to hell with this thing and turned my boost up to 20 psi and took it out for a nice joy ride in an attempt to blow the engine before I pulled the head and after I finished racing a bmw m-3 I looked in my rear view mirror and to my surprise I saw NO SMOKE and the car had a significant increase in power I had not felt before and thought to my self damn that mmo worked great. Then the light bulb went off! Lol

I had done the mmo soak and never heated the engine up long enough to burn off the soak... Haha serious user error. I freaked out as soon as I saw the smoke upon start up.

Very, VERY glad to hear my theory was wrong.

Great result and thanks for posting the outcome. Too many threads like this suddenly stop without any resolution... makes it pretty hit and miss for people who hit on them later through searches, looking for info in similar situations....
