Zero degrees and glow plug light on. Bad glow plugs 1999 E300TD

The glow plug light came on tonight.
0 degrees Fahrenheit, I suspect it will start tomorrow.
*6 glow plug tests bad.

Question, is #6 accessible with the manifold off without removing the oil filter?

Pictures anyone, Thanks

I did mine with a universal drive and deep socket.

Are you getting no reading on 6 or just a low reading? If it's none, you might get lucky and the connector just popped off. Might be worth a look if you can see down in there before removing the manifold.

Thanks for the help. It is testing open circuit. Started this morning at +0.3 degrees and took a full 45 seconds before the cylinder started to fire and the engine smooth out.

Given that this is the second BOSCH to fail from March 2011 when the Indie replaced all 6 I suspect #6 is toast. Replaced #5 in June 2013 with a Beur.

Would like to get into warmer weather before doing the replacement. Just curious will a 606 start with 2 bad glow plugs should another one go bad?

Oh boy, well with 1 plug out any engine will start, 4, 5, 6 cylinders.

With 2 out in that cold weather, I'd plug the block heater in, shove a hair dryer into the intake, and probably run a propane torch along the dead cylinder's intake runner. I can't remember if that is an aluminum intake like my 601 or if it is a plastic one like the 605. If it's plastic, don't do the torch thing.

It'll probably start if you do that.

Your socket ought to clear the oil filter housing, just depends on how long it is. Just make sure your 6 sided socket (no 12 points) seats squarely so you don't round off the shoulders of the GP's head.

For best result, the engine needs to be at operating temperature when attempting glow plug removal on this engine.

SUCCESS!! Thanks for all the help, hints, tips and guidance!!!

Warmed up to 25 around noon so I tackled the biggest pucker job you can do on a Mercedes E300 Turbo Diesel, IMO.

After # 5 was replaced with the defective torque wrench I went out and purchased a Eastwood electronic torque wrench.

Copious amounts of Kroil were used. Got it up to operating temperature with a 5 mile drive. After removing the beauty panel underneath and the bolt holding the manifold on from underneath I ran it in the garage, with the door open, back to operating temperature. Off with the manifold. Set the torque wrench for 22 foot pounds and as the yellow light came on with the tone warning me that I was getting close to 22 foot pounds . . . there was a slight "pop" as the glow plug released. Came out easily after that. Last time #5 squeaked, this time #6 didn't.

All but the beauty panel back on and being chilled to the bone that will have to wait another day.

A cold Chimay Blue will also have to wait till I warm up later this evening. I have a Chimay with each of your names on in the wine cellar. Thanks again to all.

PS replaced with BEUR, anyone want my review of Bosch Glow plugs, I will not hold back!

Here we go again #4 burnt out this time

March 2011 Indie replaced all 6 with Bosch, Replaced #5 in June 2013 when Bosch failed with a Beru, replaced #6 Bosch when it failed Feb 2014 with a Beru and this week when #4 Bosch failed I replace the remaining 4 with Beru.

Relieved that the final 4 Bosch came out and now there are all Beru Glow Plugs.

You couldn't give me a bosch glow plug for free
