OM 603 cylinder walls scratched.... now what

Removed my head from my 603.960 yesterday to find my cylinder walls pretty scratched up. I know this engines are sleeved but having a hard time finding sleeves and pistons. Does anyone have any good resources?

On a second though I am thinking of finding a good used short block anyone have one they want to sell? Trying to do this on a tight budget but its not working out so well right now.

sleeves are not plug and play, install and then bore to match your pistons.
piston sets are expensive.

How are they damaged?
Pictures would help define how serious this is.

It would also help to know which vehicle this is..

Liners are $50 each, pistons with rings are $400 each. Add labor and a $5000 short block from Metric Motors with warranty is appealing. You can find good used short blocks for ~$500. Running parts cars for $1500. Less if the head is cracked.

I figured 603.960 was enough info... Engine is out of an 87 300d it's bad enough that it needs to be fixed . Po had a k&n filter in it and it wasn't doing any filtering obviously.

Pistons are about $288 from the dealer. Labor is free cause it will be me doing the work. at this point I think i would rather find a short block in good shape. Does anyone have any leads? I live in Utah.

You might be able to find a set of used pistons on the cheap.

I rehab'ed 2 OM603 engine just using cheapo honing tool from Harbor Freight. Remove oil pan and push the pistons out. Clean the grooves and check pistons for damages. Hone cyl wall slightly and it should be OK. You can hone it with the block in the engine, just cover the crank.

This is what I did. I clean the cyl wall and slightly spray paint the wall white. I hone the engine slightly. If there is any white paint patch on the wall then it tells you the wall is oval'ed or not true. Hone it slightly again until all paint disappear then the cyl is true. Do not try to take all lines or deep scratches out. It would take too much metal from the sleeve. Hope this help, good luck.

Your clearance would be larger at that point. not seeing how this would help. and without replacing the damaged rings there would be no advantage other then now you don't have as deep of scratches.

UNFORTUNATELY STUFF LIKE THAT DOESN'T EXSIST AROUND THESE SNOWY PARTS. I WOULD LOVE IT IF I COULD FIND STUFF LIKE THAT AROUND HERE. MAYBE A TRIP TO WASHINGTON IS NEEDED.

It is your car. You can do whatever you wanted. I honed the cyl and reused the rings except oil rings. The ring gap will be slightly larger but it will be within spec. What I can tell you is that I brought back alive 2 300SDL. Check link below. Good luck.

HELP! Engine died on the 300SDL. Hard to turn by hand now.
