It was a European-delivery '81 240D, stickshift, manual windows, no sunroof, hubcap wheels and a trunk-triangle. It also was very rusty, but ran & drove great so my neighbor bought it, and really liked it. The car became his 'beach-diesel'. Just before it was stolen, he took it on a weeks vacation down the Outer Banks and it ran flawlessly. Unfortunately he only had liability insurance coverage.
Had I known the car was going to wind up being incinerated, I would've kept the trunk-triangle before I sold it!

Happy Motoring, Mark

Perhaps this story makes a case for URO parts.

I think I'd rather deal with getting re-dug in somewhere else than getting shot in the Detroit warzone. Money and connections are no good if you're 6 feet under.

This is really funny, what luck the phone was left on!

Growing up my family never locked our cars. They were all left in the driveway, keys in ignitions. We never locked the house either even on vacations, still don't in fact. Of course it helps to live in the boonies and have absolutely nothing of value!

Detroit is an interesting town. Many areas are, as described, war zones, and others are great fun and VERY well patrolled. Downtown around Cobo Hall and Joe Lewis is fine. Greektown is one of my favorite places on earth. Other areas not so much. I wouldn't worry about going to the Auto Show or Autorama - but I'd stay in Southfield or Farmington or some such suburb.

Yeah we go there and leave, no need to stay, only a 3ish hour drive. Will be at the auto show Saturday unless there's a blizzard going on...

A lot more goes into any given area than just the area itself - as per the happenstance of a car-jacking. A guy in a very old car with his doors obviously unlocked and driving at a very low speed, may have been oblivious to his surroundings, and perhaps looked very inviting to a passer by on foot. I don't tarry at low speeds with doors unlocked around strangers, for that might invite a car-jacking. Not being aware of one's surroundings can get one in trouble at times, even in an ordinary urban setting. Personally, I've never had any trouble in the weeks and months spent in Detroit when working there. Regardless downtown, Highland Park area or the time I spent in outreaching suburbs. I walk and travel with a purpose, and perhaps that is the reason why - I don't know.

This probably tops the 240D vs Geo Metro legendary story!

Maybe he had a buddy try to steal the Geo Metro and they planned to have a race
