As I've taken this car apart and put it back together I've noticed little things that show how much thought and attention to detail went into building these cars.

For example, have you noticed that there are grease fittings on the door hinges? They are the type with the little ball that is pushed open with a grease needle. I've never seen another car with greasable door hinges!

On the inside edge of the flywheel is a little dam. There are holes that extend through the flywheel to the other side so that any oil that leakes out of the pilot bearing gets caught by this little dam and is directed to the other side of the flywheel thus keeping it off of the clutch disk. Doing this required several additional machining steps. I've had a lot of cars apart, but the Mercedes is the ONLY one that had this little detail.

Have you ever wondered why they go so far? Those cylinder liners were not really necessary were they? Lots of engins run their pistons right in the cast iron block right? Buuuuuuut you don't see those engines still running strong after 300,000 miles. Running maybe, but not well!

I admire these cars because they are well crafted, durable, and timeless. And with a turbocharger, they're not even that slow!

Just my 2 cents,
Chris
exactly.

There are so many reasons why I own several Diesel Mercedes Benz automobiles, so I will just say "all the above". I agree with all the reasons why others own them, and could maybe add a few more. These cars have attributes that many if not all American cars of the era didn't have. The fact that Mercedes Benz is the only car company that offers a high mileage award, is a testament to their quality and robustness. There are many other benefits as well. One benefit I take advantage of as often as I can, is parking in the spaces marked "Hybrid and Alternative Fuel Vehicles Only" at Wallmart. There is no fuel more "alternative" than waste vegetable oil, and I can park in those spaces with a clear conscience. Again, just another reason for owning a Mercedes Diesel.......Rich
