Alternator is no good. The two they have gotten for me so far are no good as well, according to their test machine. Is this a common problem? I didn't expect to fight with this for an entire weekend. Losing my patience

It is a really common problem for rebuilt parts not to work these days.

And, yes whenever possible have them test the part before you leave the Store.

And, yes keep the Paper Work so you can return the thing for that "Lifetime Warranty" they talk about of something happens later.

It also could be that they simply don't know how to hook up the Machine Properly.

I was surprised when I had an Alternator tested at PepBoys. They actually gave Me a small Print out. And in My case it said the Diodes were shot (this was on a non-Mercedes alternator).

try to get back your original alternator, and take it to a local alternator rebuild shop. or go to an IMPORT auto parts store, and get an official BOSCH alternator... or of course, order one from our site here, and get it delivered.

+1 on rebuilding your original alternator if it is possible. Mine had bad bearings but was electrically ok. It cost me about $75 to have new bearings pressed in, regulator replaced and bench tested at a shop in Charlotte.

As long as your existing original alternator is rebuildable you will be much better off than with a parts store special.

The guy at the parts store was hooking up the machine wrong, I think. He got three alternators, tested two of them and they were bad. The third, I yanked out of his hands before he threw it in the machine and roached another one, thing works fine. Charging at 13.7 volts, all lights accounted for. I always have alternators tested before I leave the store, just because I've gone home and installed them, found out they were bad, and then had to take them out again. In this case, I guess I should have just taken it without him testing it. I didn't figure following the directions on the screen would be so hard for a parts guy, but then, people amaze me every day with their stupidity. But anyway, up and running, thanks for all your help guys!

it's frankly amazing that the MB alternator would be hooked up to a test machine incorrectly... I mean it's ground wire (black) and red to the big lug or pair of large spades, and excite to the little spade or small lug...

extremely simple... yet most parts counter jockeys cannot handle it.
I always look over their shoulder and correct them when they start to connect them...
