PicknPull question
A few questions for those parts pullers that frequent Pick N Pull yards.
I need to pull a rear end and axles from a car in a Pick N Pull yard. Since they have a "no jacks" policy, how do you accomplish this? Also, what do they have to transport large parts to the "check out counter"? Do they allow you to bring jacks for special removals, if you clear it with them first?

Around here they have big wheelbarrows and A-frame hoists. Nothing to assist dropping a tranny or diff yet I see them carted through the checkout line all the time. You should be able to smuggle a Japanese car jack in your tool box. Make it one you don't mind losing in case you're not successful smuggling it out.
Pull the bench seat from any car then drop the diff. Sixto 87 300D |

x2. You just need to get creative with the stuff they have. Let it drop on something soft, or at least limit the drop distance.

Either get creative or bring a friend.
You can usually find factory jacks in cars and rig those up to help lower but I would stack some tires under the pumpkin to catch it. |

+1 on all the above
Search out Hondas/Toyotas/Nissans in the yard, they all have scissors jacks that will go up about 15-18"

Creativity is the best too when going to pick n pulls! And figuring out how many small parts you can smuggle out in your pockets

They ban jacks in the interest of safety? They endanger more people by the need to improvise than this silly rule ever protects. Please tell me that they don't ban jack stands, at least?
I may have to call this yard to find out what means of assistance they can provide to accomplish this.

Mine will send a guy out with a jack. In your case just pull the rear seat cushion out and let it fall on that. Weighs about 100lb.

Pick N Pull, you pick it, you pull it. there is no assistance form the employees to help pull parts. how ever there is always a few hanging around that pull parts for a price.
They don`t allow jacks I guess because they are afraid some yo yo will knock a vehicle off the stands. Some times you can find a jack that was over looked when they were prepping the vehicle, but if you don`t need a jack, there will always be one. but try to find one when you need it......good luck. I was there yesterday, and saw one scissor jack and one MB jack. I have dropped a few differentials in various ways. I have dropped the whole Sub frame, dragged it out from under the vehicle and then pulled it apart. more work. If the vehicle has the Annular axles, remove the 13mm bolt in both Hubs, remove the 6 bolts at the Flange. pull it away from the Diff. use a brass drift, knock the Splines out of the hub. hold the axle with one hand while doing it, and it will come right out. Remove the driveline and the 4 13mm nuts at the Diff mount. careful, the Diff will drop down some, keep head out of the way. Remove the 4 19mm nuts that hold the Diff to the Sub frame. might need a pry bar to get her to drop and clear the Studs out of the frame. You won`t hurt the Diff by dropping it, but I use some carpet to keep it out of the dirt when it does drop. Leave the axle flanges in the Diff (Annular style) you won`t be charged for them. they will think it is part of the Diff. and they keep the dirt out. If the vehicle has the homokenetic axles. ( all one piece) Remove the driveline. Remove the 13mm bolts in the hubs, and drive the axles out of the Splines. they should clear the back side slightly. Remove the 4 13mm bolts that bolt the Diff mount to the body. (keep head clear as it drops down) Remove the 4 19mm Nuts on top of the Sub Frame. might need a pry Bar to pry it loose, and she should drop down and the axles should be clear of the Hub Splines enough to clear. You might need to either cut the Brake Hoses, I have had those hang me up, and also remove the sway bar links. Iam doing this from memory, been a while. Usually when the Diff mount is unbolted from the body, the Diff will drop maybe a foot. I removed a 2:65 diff from a W116 6.9, and when I removed the 4 13mm diff bolts, the Differential dropped straight to the ground. scared the crap out of me. ![]() A Jack sure could be help full, and a safety tool for sure with these diff. use it to hold the diff, and then slowly let it hang down. Be aware, sometimes PNP does not drain the Differentials, I have had that surprise when I removed the rear cover. Hope something I said here is help full. Charlie

Cars fall off the rims they have them sitting on fairly easily, so yeah, thats why they do it. Just either drop it on the ground or on a seat or tires, thats what I usually do. If you need to lift the whole vehicle for something you can use the engine hoist things to lift it up too. Being creative is exactly right.

good posts all. i have usually seen some carts around that you can commandeer to carry the heavy stuff out. i'm sure they don't roll well on those granite rocks, but it may be better than nothing.

You could bring in a nest of cardboard boxes and drop it on that, and cut them away. But that's overthinking it. Just find something there.

And I am not recommending this.
In fact, if you do it, it will be done at your own risk. And I would never, ever be trying to sneak a jack into P-N-P. ...but if you try, go for a bottle jack ![]()

I've used the arched back and pelvis method of dropping a diff. The MB diffs are so light and small comparitively, that this is pretty easy to do.
