Take it from a guy who's been married for 30 years....set the ground rules now before you're married about what part of your life is open for her input and what's none of her concern. You'll thank yourself a million times over later on.

For example:

Subjects she is entitled to share in the decision making or be the decision maker;

- where we attend church
- where the kids go to school
- what's on the tv
- where to go on vacation
- what's for dinner
- how to decorate the living room, bed room, etc

Subjects in which she should stay out;

- Your parents / family
- your friends
- your workshop, how neat you keep it, and what you are working on in it
- the schedule in which you intend to complete her honey do list

I sure wish someone would have given me this advise 31 years back...I would have avoided a lot of arguments.

I wanted to buy a house long before I met my Fiance, so it is not a new concept for me. For her, she just got her first apartment. She lived at her parent's place for a while after college. Buying a house is new territory for her.

Joe, I hear ya on the waiting thing. It looks like I won't have a choice but to wait. I hate paying rent for something I will never own. It is thousands of dollars out the window; that is what really gets my goose.

The car supposedly has 250K on it but I have not seen a 120MPH speedometer in an 83 300SD before. It looks like someone did something to the cluster at one point because the fuel, oil, temp gauges are orange while the speed and tach are yellowed. The engine bay is nasty compared to my car. I will be taking this one to the car wash and spraying it down before I do anything on it. I will check the tank strainer some day and see what the situation is there. I hate it when people don't do WVO right.

Paying cheap rent while you pile up money for a home, is a stellar strategy. Unfortunately, many ppl will not sacrifice to the point of living in the cheap rentals. The less you pay on rent==the more money you can pile up faster.

If the 300SD was an optional purchase when you've already got several cars, she may recognize that as frittering away money on hobbies, that could go to debt/rent/saving for a home. However, if the SD is something you can flip soon for a profit, then it's a different story. Also, sometimes women view a man's interests as time away from them. The guy is out in the garage having the time of his life wrenching on a great find of an MB diesel, and all she sees is his absence. Women will veto or buck activities that take time from the relationship.

Good luck on your new SD!

I told her I would sell it and she said no. If I ever do have to sell it, I am certain that I could get more than I paid for it even if I don't touch a thing on it.

Yeah, the clear coat is peeling. It's peeling on the doors, too. Maybe I will do a cheapie paint job on it some day but I'm going to save most of the cosmetic improvements for my original 300SD. I already have tons of money invested into the mechanics of that car. It might as well look nice, too.

The radiator is out and with a buddy of mine who knows a guy that owns a radiator shop who will put new tanks on the radiator. I think my buddy said it could be done for $40 using Behr tanks. Can't beat that with a stick!

In case I didn't mention it, the upper radiator neck had broken in the past and someone use PVC pipe and glue to jerry-rig it. The pipe is actually glued into the hose...

I have new hoses and Zerex G05 waiting for the radiator to be reinstalled.

That interior's not bad for a southern car. Better than mine.

I've often wished that I'd gone ahead with my plan in my youth to greyhound out to places where cars don't rust, then drive them back here to sell. You're likely to triple your dollar up here.

Separate money is a big help. I listen to guys who dump everything into a common account then let her dole out an allowance and I'm amazed at what they put up with. And what they have no idea about. Mine is mine, hers is hers. We have a common account that covers things like mortgage, prop taxes, kids expenses but that's budgeted for each of us. That way any extra money I make is mine, no questions asked.

I also make sure I spend money to buy her kitchen goodies, which she likes, then tell her I gave up buying a nice tool for the shop to do it.

The dash has a cap on it, otherwise, I'm sure it has cracks. The MBtex seats resist the heat and sunlight a lot better than leather.

We already have a joint account. We plan to use it for wedding expenses soon and later use it for common expenses like rent. She understands that we will be maintaining separate accounts. I'm not interested in someone else controlling my money and I think she understands that now.

I'd postpone if I couldn't trust her with my money. We do have common and individual accounts but that is in case something happens for example, one of us dies or gets sued. Neither is likely in the near future. Regardless, the other would need access to some cash.

the speedo is correct. 120MPH is standard in 83, (82 was the last year for the 85mph speedo) I've noticed the long needles fade faster than the short ones. also, it depends on the way the car was parked, and such.
it looks like a great car, congratulations!

Was that a cutoff on the exact start of 1983 or partway through the year? I can't help but think I have seen several 1983 models with 85MPH speedos in them. My first 300SD, made in 3/83, has an 85MPH speedo in it but some clown had a 160MPH speedo in it when I bought it. The new 300SD was made in 6/83.

I will repaint the needles soon since the car is out of commission waiting on a radiator. I replaced the door strikers last night.

Since this topic (money) keeps getting written about here by the OP, et al.......

When a married couple does not or cannot agree on their money, they get separate accounts. Not knowing what your legal partner is doing financially is exactly where some married couples want to be. Why that would be popular, or even preferred, I haven't a clue.

The only separate account I keep is as a matter of necessity, to not get cleaned out by the I.R.S. BTDT. Never again.

I personally know several couples that have no idea what their legal marriage partner is doing with money. Unfortunately, this does not relieve them legally for anything their legal marriage partner does financially.

Were I unable to agree with, or trust a person I was married to with ALL our assets/money, the last thing I would be, is married to them.

The el numero uno reason why married couples get divorced, is==M O N E Y. That alone, would seem to indicate why a married couple needs to co-mingle their assets, and actually agree and know what their legal partner is doing, RE: money. However, in the event that something happens to their spouse, if you have your own money, it wouldn't concern you as to where their assets were.

When a married couple agrees to disagree about money - then individually goes their own way with their money? That's disagreement right there. A BIG Red flag.

I don't distrust my fiancee with money by any means. If I did, I would not have a joint account with her. It's not about money any more. I'm not the only guy here who has had to justify a vehicle purchase. Women don't always see the value in the things we but most of us try to make sound investments. I complain to her when she buys computer stuff or Star Wars toys, so I can expect the same when I buy car. In all fairness, I pissed her off by making an assumption before the car issue came up.
