1988 190D Speedometer
Does anyone know if you can put a 190E speedometer head in a 190D? My speedo works but not the odometer or trip odometer. 190E heads seem easy to find, but not 190D. Only visual difference I see is the 190E heads read to 140mph vs. 125mph on the 190D.

Haven't done it myself but I have read on some of the forums that all you have to do is change the sensor on the back of the speedometer. Just put the one off you car onto the back of the replacement. They do interchange though they have a different exterior.

The speedometer is geared to match the differential gearing. If your 190D is a 3.27 per example and you get a speedometer from a 190E with a 2.82 differential then the speedometer will read slow. There are folks out there who change the speedo gears for you to match your differential.

What transfers the information to the speedometer face is the Hall effect sensor on the back of the speedometer where the cable joins the head. Those sensors all vary by model, but the head parts are all interchangeable mechanically. The sensor and the speedometer face plate are the only differences.
The speedometer number is on the face place of the head. That face plate can be easily changed to the new head along with the sensor and I'd bet (not all that much!) it will be accurate. I'd sure try that before I invested in a new replacement. |

The little plastic gear for the odometer has a habit of slipping out and making it inoperable. The's a couple of DIY tutorials on the simple fix to this problem. I've never had the problem but it's just a matter of pushing the gear back in and buggering the shaft to keep it from coming out again. Don't have a link but look at the DIY's here. If that's your only problem it's an easy fix. |

The odo stoppage probably is caused by a gear not binding to the shaft properly. I fixed my 190D by crimping the shaft a bit ( made it oval shape ) and pushed the gear back in with a drop of super-glue. I think the gear that slips is grey-ish color but cannot be sure.
