Excellent tranny shop here in Santa Rosa, they rebuilt my '96 E300, but it's about 90 minutes away, I'm sure you'd prefer something closer.

i would try sac

Davis does not have very many mechanics. I would tow it into West Sac. there are many places over there that will be less $$$. AAMCO I would not recommend unless you source your own transmission and have them install it. Most mechanics can do that. AAMCO will charge you a lot.
I used to live in Davis. It has been a while but for Davis I used to go to Center City Automotive. its been 20 years since my friend worked there and they are still there. They were established well before that. You can get a rebuild from the bay area shipped up to your mechanic of choice and swapped out.
I would seriously doubt AAMCO would give a fair deal compared to an independent mechanic. Search for mercedes rebuilt transmissions in SFbay area. I know there are a few outfits that have MB rebuilds. They can get them to your mech. in a day.
There are a couple of suggestions for Sacramento MB related shops in the forum good shop list. That may be your best bet. Davis mechanics are expensive and probably don't have MB knowhow.

I always heard that Peter Schmid was an excellant source for MB Transmissions.

MZF-Bayer Transmissions

These guys are in Southern Calif, but have some good technical info on their site, maybe some help.

rebuilt remanufactured mercedes benz automatic transmissions

I have never heard anything good about AAmaco.

Could be a simple fix, what`s it doing or not doing?

You're better off in the Sacramento area. I'd strongly suggest Dobson's German Auto Service - Roseville, El Dorado Hills, Folsom, Sacramento

I've used a number of indies in this area and they are by far the best and most accommodating I've ever found in over 25 years. Towing won't be cheap to anywhere in the Sacramento area, but it won't be much different than to these folk's shop.

AAmco is a franchise operation. Franchises are businesses that are created by the franchisor and sold to franchisees to run according to the company formula. All too often owners that buy franchises are "product agnostic", meaning that they bought a "business" and could care less what the "product" is - printing, hot dogs, frozen yoghurt, hamburgers, auto paint, plumbing, hotel, carpet cleaning, auto lube or whatever. This means that the quality can range from really great to incredibly poor. This is in stark contrast to someone who opens a business because they are an expert and love to develop a quality product and are passionate about it. I'm not saying don't go to franchise companies, just be aware that you never know what you'll get.

If you could source a rebuilt transmission from a reputable re-builder and then have a mechanic install it, I would think that that would be one of your better options.

What did you figure out? I'd say a used transmission installed by anyone is the best bet in those circumstances.
