Best Shop Manual for a 240D?
Just picked up a 240D.
What's the best shop manual available for these? (I'm used to the Bentley shop manuals for VW's, looking for something similar).

There is the Haynes manual for the W123. It`s ok as a guide. the MB FSM is the best. It is a 2 Vol set. then there is the FSM for the OM616 engine.
Look in E-Bay, they come up every once in a while, both paper and on CD. Charlie

![]() Let me say, that you really do NOT need a shop manual. All the answers to any question you could possibly ask about these old Mercedes diesels can be found on this forum if you perform a "site" search. I like to use Google and add the site: www.peachparts.com after my terms in the search box. Try it. In addition, Charlie (charmalu) who already answered your thread, owns a 240D. ![]() EDIT: And of course, we will want to see pics of your new car !!!! At least give us the details.

unfortunately there is nothing comparable to the bentley when looking for something for an MB. However, as posted already, you can use this forum and others like it, haynes, chilton, manuals, the online EPC which is a little top heavy compared to the bentley. More work sourcing the info, but its all out there in some form. I wish bentley would make their way into doing some MB manuals too.

I have a Bently manual for a W124, picked it up at a Swap meet. Doesn`t really tell me a whole lot as I remember.

Original factory manuals are probably the nicest to own. Getting scarcer with time though. Some cds are junk and some may be okay. I do not like the one I have.

excellent!
these are useful books, but bentley needs to do what they do with VW. My VW bentley book makes it possible for someone completely unfamiliar with the car to reduce it to 60k parts, and put it back together again. Its amazing how comprehensive they are. Over on VW forums the usual answer to questions are "buy a bentley". ![]()

The Haynes manual for the W123 has a lot of good useful info for maintenance, tearing down the engine, doing the brakes etc... the electrical section has a lot of drawings, but mostly for the UK.
Some have mentioned the Torque Listings are not accurate sometimes. The Transmission section only shows the oil Iron box 4-spd and a some what tear down of it. Doesn`t show the later style all one piece aluminum case 4-spd manual or any info on the 85 Kali Kar, even though it suppose to cover all of them. The best Haynes manual for a Manual Transmission teardown and step by step pictures, it the one for the 190-E. It really covers the 5-spd manual trans. If it wasn`t for that manual you would still be trying to figure out where that little spring went in your W201 5-spd into a W123 thread. ![]() Charlie

I have not seen a Bentley Manual that has the 300D 617 Diesels.
If you are going to get a Haynes or similar Manual get a used one on eBay or look in your Public Library. The info in the is somewhat minimal. I dissagree that you don't need the Factory Service Manual. Depending on what you are doing the Forum is not always going to answer your question in a timley manner and then you are sometimes going the way someone else did something that is not going to work for you. Other times the Forum has ways to do things to get around the Factory Tools and so on. My point is that the Manual is sort of a minimum starting point. You are supposed to be able to get the CD or DVD Manuals from below: Part numbers for service Manuals STARTEK Star Service CDs and DVDs Contact Consumer Promotions at 1-800-FOR-MERCedes for current pricing and ordering information on the accompanying CDs and DVDs that are available for purchase. People say the Manuals are free for viewing on Startek. But, I believe you need to register with them. The Mercedes Manuals on CD do not cover any Transmission or Turbo Charger rebuilding but otherwise cover the whole Car.

YESSS!!!!! Thank You!!!
Thank you all!! This will definitely get me started!
Daw_two Yep! I'm back! Had to scratch my diesel itch again...I've missed them. Sold the 300SD a couple years back (low compression, bad tranny) and picked up a 1980 240D. Unknown mileage (odo broke at 160K), but estimated to have about 200K on it. Engine is REALLY strong, extremely little smoke (as in pretty much none) at all. Tranny shifts good & strong too. Body's in fair shape (minimal rust, paint still shines). It should be a great project car. First priority will be fixing the rear window seal. It's leaking into the trunk on both sides. Then door seals all around. She's pretty slow, but she easily cruises at freeway speeds & rides well. So, another diesel project has begun! Here's what she looks like: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

charmalu,
I can see my car is a kindred spirit to yours....and yep, slow, slower, and even slower pretty much aptly describe mine as well. Definitely not a speed demon. I'm used to an old Isuzu Diesel Pickup that was just about as slow so it'll be fun.
