Filthy Engine - Por 15 Marine Clean?

Working on and around the engine tonight, noticed the engine bay is filthy top and bottom. There appears to be an oil leak coming from the rear of the engine somewhere. The engine needs a good cleaning; seems I remember reading on the forum that POR 15 Marine Clean does an excellent job of cleaning a motor. Thoughts or ideas?

Keep it dirty, on old cars I have seen only oily engine bays or rusty engine bays Instead, consider to drink beer.

Even on my convertible, it is a turbo engine with engine slanted. One side is oily from leaky oil cooler lines, and has no speck of rust. Other side of the bay, no awrl, all brown of rust!

Marine Clean works good, I have used a lot of it. I always mix it 50/50 but you can go with a lighter mix. think the paper work/directions I got from the POR distributer/dealer says you can mix it as low as 10% ratio.

Be careful on aluminum (maybe it`s may 50/50 ratio) it will discolor it some if left on too long. I spray in on the oily parts of the engine now and then as a touch up, and use the garden hose with a sprayer nozzel and wash it off.

I have a place on the low side of the driveway I wash the cars. I use the Marine Clean and a stiff brush to scrub the wheels/tires. I have noticed the MC does attack the Asphalt. Asphalt is just a tar and gravel mix, and a petrolium product. the MC emulsives the oils. best to use it over concrete.

If you can steam clean the engine and the eng/bay it will save a lot of elbo grease. when we got the 240 3 yrs ago, the eng was a greassy mess. I steamed cleaned it, then using wax grease remover.......

and a bunch of rags, wiped down everything, and followed up with a wax with a paint cleaner. came out looking like new.

I've found that Marine clean is really good for lightly soiled articles - it doesn't cut the mustard for those stubborn stains...

...I've been using a foam aerosol engine cleaner (available from all good gift shops) first...

Consider...

First,Where you abide.Do the authorities use SALT on Winter roadways?
Second,Your MB has a Corrosion Protection installed @ the Factory on both
the Engine compartment and the underside of the suspension.
Third, the FSM calls for Re-Installation of the Protection AFTER each engine/
underside CLEANING.

BUT,the Best CLEAN is attained with P21S applied and then "Tooth-Brushed"
BEFORE rinsing.
CAUTION! This will remove ALL "GUNK" as well as all the MB applied Protection.
(You will want to have Chemical Proof Gloves on your Hands!) AND Eye Protection.

What's "P21S"?

Following this thread closely as I've had a heck of a time getting the Diesel gunk off my 617. Seems to be some kind of super gunk resistant to all normal cleaning media - and Kryptonite.

The steam cleaning followed by the wax grease remover sounds reasonable. Question: Who makes the "wax with a paint cleaner" product(s)?

Thank you for the feed back.

Simple green has always worked great for me. That and a pressure washer.

Ditto. And the grass always grows greener where the SG washes down to.

Kleen-Strip is the brand I posted. think it can be bought at most hardware stores. Auto supplies sell these products especially ones thad deal with automotive paints. various Mfg make it. It is around $20 a gallon and if you buy PPG is costs more.

When Iam washing greasy parts in gas, I`ll use this for a final rinse to really get the oil residue off. using it on a paint surface won`t lift or wrinkle it like using brake cleaner, as this stuff is used in painting body panels before sanding or final paint. good stuff.

wax and grease remover - Google Search

I have a gallon of marine Clean too, I know this was the original question.
There are a lot of good products out there that will do the same resullts>

What is the process for re-installation of the Protection per the FSM?

Warning to people who live in the damp(!) =>

Keep well away from pressure washers - they will be the cause of rust damage over the long term...

My technique

I use Marine Clean, great stuff! Buy two mud pan liners at Home Depot or other - they are also good for coolant system work and place under car with plastic drop cloth. I spray marine clean on and use a garden sprayer with HOT water and micro burst areas so I do not drive water into places where it should not be and eliminate big greasy messes. I also use small brushes and paper towels as needed - after, I blow excess water away with a compressor and then use a light machine oil to recoat block and other, not too much! The garden sprayer tip gets in to tight spots, very handy! Have fun!

X2

Those Mud Pans from HD work great, I have 2, large and a smaller one. like you say draining the radiator or block drain. when I change the Trans/Torque convertor fluid, I slip this under the trans when I drop the pan to change the filter.

Wash out the Mud pan and then it`s good to wash the baby in later on.
