Outback Imports -- get the Japanese 4x4 you could never buy here!

Here is the link. Outback Imports imports older Toyota, Nissan, and Isuzu 4x4s. They have (among many others) compact Toyota 4x4s, Toyota package and passenger vans, and All-Trac Corollas. I've never done business with them, but I'd love a HiAce Diesel Van with a 5-speed someday .

from what I could tell, all they had for sale (that wasn't "arrived- SOLD!") was a 92 Toyota pickup with a campershell for $42,000 CAD...

For that kind of money you could do "your own" conversion or pay someone to do it for you. What a rip off!

I would go for a mid 90's Chevy with a Cummins conversion done right before I would touch one of those. For that much, you could make it a "show truck"!

I saw that one too, a pretty ugly vehicle. I was thinking the same as you when I saw that price tag Snookwhaler. Although they did'nt have the price on any of the other "sold" vehicles....if they are anywhere close to that camper shell toyota, it IS a rip off. I also can't understand how they can ask so much for a RHD vehicle. I would think them to be priced more like a cheap alternative rather than exotic imports, they probably have to recoup some of their shipping costs, but still.....I guess the novelty would wear off after a few attempts at passing someone on the highway. You are giving up quite abit of safety just to drive one, and for alot of money too!

I agree you could make your own for cheaper, or buy a nice used Dodge Cummins with a camper in the back already, for way less than that.... and with the steering wheel on the correct side for our roads. The site offers some cool vehicles to look at but maybe not practical for everyone.

They can build a hockey rink in Phoenix Arizona....at that point there was no reason to live here anymore. I am tired of the cold....have been for years now. We should be nearing the end of what was a very cold and snow riddled winter, but it just does not want to let go. SirNik84...I'll trade you. You live up here and I'll live down there.k

Actually there was a big business a few years back, bringing RHD Japanese-market diesel/4x4 vehicles and sports cars into Canada. The sports cars went cheap, as they were usually in pretty pooched shape, pulled out of the iffy lane at dealer auctions. The diesel trucks were always pricey. A couple of guys near me drive them.

The import biz is dying out now. I am not surprised it can still function in the Yukon.

We can thank the importers who sold Jap-market RHD Twin Turbo Nissan 300ZXs to 20-year olds for that. Many horror stories, like in my area, where a 21-year-old punk lost control of his TT ZX on wet pavement and killed a couple waiting at a bus stop. The kicker on that is that it was barely 40 feet from where he had come from a full stop at a red light. He managed to lose it on spoolup over 40 feet, bad enough to mount a sidewalk and take out people at bus stop.

Here in Quebec, the existing stock is grandfathered and can be sold/retitled. Other than that, RHD is now banned. I believe Ontario and BC were moving in the same direction, not sure of that.

To follow up on Snookwhaler`s comment, there are companies that broker used Japan-market powertrains to customers all over the world. I am surprised I have never heard of someone using such a source to import an asian-market turbodiesel powertrain for something sold over here only as a gasser.

They say that on average, their vehicles are about $25,000 CAD, but that Toyota diesel trucks are very desirable in Japan as well as here, and so it's difficult to find any. If I could get a 1988 Toyota van with diesel and a 5-speed for $30,000, I would be very tempted*.

*If I had that money set aside for car buying, that is.
