Greetings All,

I have a choice to make. We have an 05 E320 CDI with 137,000 miles on it, have owned it for 6 years and no problems. We also have a 98 E300D with 97,000 on it, have owned it for 2 years. Both cars are in excellent shape, look great and run great. My wife wants a new car. Which one would you keep and why?

Can you please clarify? Do you want us to choose between the wife and the cars, or between the two cars?

E300 will run forever. CDI will have problems

CDI is great. Will not last as long as the E300 in the long run, but is a step up in comfort and technology (which I am sure you two know). I think it is unfair to say that the CDI will have “problems”, which implies that the E300 is...problem-less? If you haven’t had any significant issues at 140K miles, I’d say you have a stellar machine.

(we have a 06 E320 CDI with 60K, just fyi)

Although I've never owned one, I would keep the CDI. Newer technology, safer, and from what I've read here, much better fuel mileage.

You should be able to get a lot for the E300TD, provided it is in tip-top shape. I turned down $12,000.00 for mine for the second time just last week, with more miles on it than your's - however mine is in near perfect condition, complete records, books, garaged, and seats/deck covered since day one - something that is a very rare find in most any aging car.

Do not sell either. You will regret it because even the 98 rides better than most American and Japanese cars 10 years newer. Plus the resale value on the 98 is about as low as it will go before it starts to go up again like the W123s and w124 300d 2.5s in pristine shape. Btw MB only imported 3000 E300 turbodiesels in 1998 and 1999 which is fewer than a Buick Grand National for example. Just my .02$

Wow. a dilemma for sure.
why must you get rid of one of them?
what does the wife want to drive? why does she want something different? basically, what are her reasonsfor the choice?

as for a decision between the two, I'd decide which one I wanted the most and keep it.
why does one have 40K more miles on it than the other? who drives which now? have you owned them both since new, or what's the history with them and you?

the turbo 606 is a solid efficient powerplant, and the 98 transmission is supposed to be fantastic, but the 05 vehicle is so full of improvements, and tweaks, and such... hard choice I'd not like to make.

X2. I recently sold my '98 E300, but really enjoyed the car. A couple days ago I went with a friend to help him make the decision to buy an '07 E320 BLUETEC. The car had only 26,000 miles on it and was in FLAWLESS condition. He got it for $26,000 (+ tax etc). Driving home (90 miles), the car got 32 MPG. Having experienced both cars, personally, I would have a hard time letting either one go if I had the same decision to make as you.
