What do I need to put a turbo from a latter model 5 cyl on a 1980?

I would guess...

turbo
exhaust manifold
turbo compatible ip? alda?
turbo oil plumbing
turbo car's air cleaner

This ignores the inherent differences of the NA and Turbo engines...oil squirters at the pistons, etc.

Agreed with the above, don't bother, obtain a turboed engine.

Different injectors, different pistons to name a couple of items.

Valves too, maybe, sodium filled exhaust.

Rockers have a Carbide face on the Turbo engine.

X2 on all of the above info. you can turbo it, though it WILL shorten the life of the engine.

My 2¢ worth, for what ever it is worth.

This is probably the cheapest way to a proper conversion:

1983 Mercedes 300CD

1985 Mercedes Benz 300CD coupe diesel - BTW, 17" CLK wheels are very rare. MB only made them in 16"

Yeah, that 85 300CD Couple sure looks like it's worth $5K. Although engine is a little dirty, it does look dry.

I put a turbo motor in my 1980 CD and I love it. It helps to get a complete parts car for your donor and transfer the whole drivetrain, not just the motor. The transmission is different; the exhaust is bigger diameter; the rear end is geared lower. The radiator is bigger (and has an overflow tank - get that and its mounting bracket from the donor). My donor car was a wrecked coupe so I did not have to figure out if there is any difference between the drive shafts - there might be. Luckily with these old diesels wiring is not a huge issue but you will need some wiring harness bits too, for the glow plugs, the neutral safety switch and the turbo over-boost solenoid. The existing glow plug relay works but you'll use the donor glow plug harness. The accelerator linkage is also different and you'll need the mounting bracket for that too, from the donor. I haven't yet hooked up the cruise control for my coupe and don't know to what extent the cruise control amps and wiring are different (the cruise systems certainly look different though). The turbo's intake hose is larger diameter and the indentation on the body panel (up near the right headlight) is too narrow for the turbo intake scoop - to do it right you'd want to transfer that body part, too, which would involve a little tack-welding -- or just take a hammer to the existing body panel if you're not worried how that will come out....

While you're at it you might as well pull the nefarious "evil servo" ACC system out of your '80 coupe and upgrade to the more modern ACC 3 system from the donor car. Or go retro to a manual system from a 240d. That's a whole 'nuther topic, though.

CFH, that is a great write up on the engine swap.

There are 2 different after market cruise control units that have been used and installed in the past.
PeachPartsWiki: Audiovox CCS-100 Aftermarket Cruise Control Install

PeachPartsWiki: Rostra Aftermarket Cruise Control Install

The W123 with the OM617.952 engine used the 3:07 Differential from 82 - 84.
Then in 85 they used the 2:88 differential.
These 2 diff`s were used in the W126 300SD as well from the same years and will cross over to the W123.

If I was going to rip out the Evil Servo "Type Two" and swap in another AC Climate control system, I too would go with the "Type one" system as used in the 240D. I have one now I want to install before winter in our 85. Be sure to take it all apart and clean it up and replace all foam seals for the doors.

the ip is the same other then the ada being changed to an alda, and of course the tuning inside the ip is differant, and good ip shop can reset it to the turbo specs.

I have added a turbo to my 240 and it is great, so far 10,000 miles on it, with no troubles. Look at my post in the performance section "building a 616" for more details.

I will say if you can easyly get a turbo engine then just go that way. For me I did not want the heavyer 617 in my 240, just makes for a poor handling car. The 300 is just to nose heavy for proper cornering. Good freeway car though.
