Turbo Not Working '87 300 TDT

My car feels like the turbo is not working. 0 to 60 times are around 16 seconds and there is no feeling of the turbo coming on. What would be the first thing to check?

Check/clean the banjo bolt in the intake manifold that feeds pressure to the ALDA. If the IP has no boost signal, it will be like driving with a N/A engine.

Also make sure the overboost protection valve is not clogged, remove it from the drivers side firewall and try to blow through he bottom connector. If you cant blow through it that's a problem. Buy new, or clean it with brake cleaner fluid. Make sure all the rubber fitting are good while you're at it, they get cracked and don't hold pressure.

That car won't do 0-60 mph in 16 seconds without help from the turbo. How's the air cleaner? How old are the fuel filters?

I was getting 16 maybe 17 seconds 0 to 60 mph. Maybe the stopwatch on my i phone is wrong. All filters are recently replaced.

Anyway, thanks ROLLGUY and BLACKCDI, I checked both your suggestions and found a broken hose at the overboost protection valve. The turbo is working fine now.

You have to love these simple fixes. Since my foot's already in my mouth and BLACKCDI knows I'm a goofball I'll keep going. The turbo was contributing to the power even with the overboost protection solenoid blocked. It was just a very limited contribution. If you [hypothetically] jam the turbo impeller, you will not get to 60 mph within 16 seconds.

It would be funnier if the guy owned a Mercedes. Jimmy I was getting ready to call the police and have them perform a welfare check on you. I've seen a couple threads with TD(T) and nothing from Batman. I'm glad you are still lurking around.

What does the overboost valve look like?

It's a black box about 20cm on its base and 30cm vertically. It has a couple of wires and a couple of vacuum lines connected to it. It's likely the one just ahead of the windshield washer bottle on an '87 D/TD. jmbeam, only the '94 SD in your sig line has a turbo and overboost is managed by the ECU through the wastegate vacuum actuator (boo, hiss...) and a MAP sensor. The MAP sensor is the oddball Nippondenso box on the left fenderwell with a vacuum line from the intake manifold. Oddball because who expects to see Nippondenso electronics in a MB engine bay. Actually, the overboost protection solenoid is not very different from the electric engine shut-off actuator in your SD.

So my 94 S350D does not have an overboost protection valve? Is it just a coincidence that the turbo boost on this car seemed to disappear at the same time it wont shut itself off until I lift the hood and pull down the lever on the right side of the engine?

It could be more than a coincidence. The same engine vacuum pump supplies engine shut-off and emission control devices. The brake booster too but it has a big reservoir and check valve so it could be the last to notice a reduction in vacuum supply. No vacuum = no engine shut-off, no boost, no EGR (which also means no boost), etc.

Get your hands on a vacuum diagram, there might be one in this sticky thread, and dive into it. Without a diagram, the first place to check is right at the engine vacuum pump ahead and inboard of the power steering pump. It's driven by a cam on the IP timer so it's on the front of the engine opposite the IP. There are 2 fittings atop the pump - a big threaded fitting with the brake booster line and a small rubber hose for engine ancillaries. Engine shut-off vacuum taps into the check valve along the brake booster line. That sort of dismisses a common failure point outside the pump as the cause of both problems. Follow the big and small lines and see what you find.
