Hooray! I got all the welding done!

I made a fixture to hold the compressor mounts for welding:

The finished product ready for paint!

I got six of them painted today, and they will be ready to ship once the proper belts arrive (being the numbskull that I am, I ordered the wrong size).
The belts should be here by Thursday or Friday giving those on the list time to send $ for their kit......Rich

My AC bracket arrived to day from Rich. It is a well made bracket, I recommend any one reading this thread to place your order.

Testing complete

I have been using my Sanden (used) compressor equipped 300SD for a while now, and feel that the testing is complete. Although I have had some aux fan fuse problems, the compressor mounting bracket and idler system have worked flawlessly since the installation. I drove the car to San Diego yesterday (310 mile round trip), and the A/C worked great. I had to run the fan on low once it cooled the cabin, and still got "cold feet" (literally!).

I have sent out 3 kits so far, and am awaiting to see them installed and working. All installation questions and reviews should be posted here.

Rich,
I just sent you a reply to your PM. I am still interested in the kit and am posting here just in case you don't get an email notification about my PM. Thanks again for engineering this setup!

I still have 2 Gen 1 kits available. I am not sure who spoke up for them, but they are on a first-come first-served basis....Rich

Scrap block needed to make a fixture

I am in need of a scrap block to make a more accurate fixture:
Anyone got a scrap 616 or 617 block?
If you have one, please let me know. Thanks, Rich

Like your idea the tensioner moves out to put more pressure on the accessory, but as you increase tension you make the contact area on the accessory less. This leads to big problems on the VWs with the alternator belt slipping.

Because the AC compressor's drive is a lot bigger around that the VWs alternator you might not have trouble with it. But, it might be nice to have the tensioner push on the back side of the belt, so as you make the belt tighter it wraps around the compressor pulley more.

I see this on Sanden site............

Due to low demand, Sanden has discontinued R-12 models. This includes the following R-12 compressor series (SD505, SD507, SD508, SD509, SD510, SD708, SD709, TR70, TRF90, and TRF105). There are R134a replacements for the R12 models in most cases. Please contact one of our distributors for more information.

Seems I miss read this above about the 508 Rich.. So, any of the above will work.

.

I'm planning on running R-134a. I'm hoping to find a USED one to use....because of budget constraints.

Which model should I be looking for to use with the GEN 2 kit?

What cars might I find it on?

Thanks!!

In the yards, I have found them on VW cars (older), and Porsche. The VW has a deeper back plate on some models, so it will need to be changed, or find one with the short back plate. The bonus on the VW is that it has the rear facing ports. The Porsche one should be bolt in (short back plate).

Can you be a bit more specific on the VW models/years? I seriously doubt I will ever see a Porsche in the local junkyards.

Is there a MODEL number or particular Sanden configuration? Surely, there are a bunch of models that would work, correct? I know having the ports out the rear would be the easiest to work with.

Thanks.

Here is a list that I was working off of when I was combing the junk yards for a Sanden compressor (and probably will be again). I printed the list and used in the yard as a guide. It would be nice if there was a way to do some cursory tests on a compressor in the yard. Are there any indicators that could be used to increase the odds of getting a good one?

Hope this helps

As a side note, I'm now back in the game of installing A/C in my diesel SL with the OM617. I now believe that I can use a P/S pump from a W124 and mount it where the A/C normally goes with a remote reservoir, block off the vacuum pump (and go electric) and install the Sanden where the P/S pump normally goes and re-positioning the fuel filter.

The w115 300d has a power steering pump located there already with a somewhat remote reservoir. You can probably use that mounting setup for your engine.

Well that would certainly simplify things significantly. Thanks for the heads up.

I have a Sanden SD508 R12 compressor from a VW with verified mileage (not more than 62k). The ports come out the back (opposite the clutch). Is this a suitable compressor? It spins freely and the clutch pulls in and appears in exc condition. How much is it worth?
