1980 240D transmission yoke

Hi, I was wondering if someone might know if the transmission yoke is the same on a 1980 240D manual 4 speed, and a 1983 240D automatic. I just completed a swap of a manual into my car. Before installing it I noticed the yoke seemed a little sloppy on the manual transmission. It had a bit of clockwise/ counterclockwise play. In my haste and tunnel vision I dismissed the play, not considering I might have a replacement right on the automatic I removed. The automatic does not have any play at all. Now that the swap is complete I notice some slop in the drivetrain when shifting. It's not the shifter, it shifts beautifully. The flex discs are good and so is the carrier bearing, and U-joint. Is the yoke play normal? Are the 2 yokes interchangable. Thanks for the help.

there should be no vertical play in the yoke. it should slide for and aft but with some effort.

I had the same problem with our 80 240D, nut had loosened up and the Yoke was working back and forth. pulled another Yoke off my spare Iron box 4-spd, and used the nut from that trans to the one in the car. then the staked part was about 180 from where the original nut was.

You will need a special socket with 4 pins that lock into the nut to remove/replace it.

I had read where the auto trans Yokes were the same and would swap over. seems they are. but you will need one with gthe same size fingers (the tri piece). the gassers use a larger Flex Disk.

Does anyone know if the flanges are the same for manuals and automatics, or are they specialized?

They are the same. I took one from an auto 240D and put it onto my manual.

Here is a link from the special tools listed here on the Forum. the first Socket listed I believe is the one you need. $77.90, a little pricy.

You can make a socket as mentione in this Post

Great information! I'll remove the yoke flange from the automatic tomorrow, and try to remove the special nut on the manual over the weekend. Wish me luck, Thanks for all the help. I'll follow up with how it turns out.

I don`t remember the torque setting of the nut right now, but to tighten it down, as I remember, I stuck a socket behind the flange so it wedged against the case to keep things from turning.

The trans was in the car when it did this.

Yolk tool

Good evening,

I had a flex disk go on me and it twisted up the yolk.

I am lucky to have a spare auto trans with the same yolk.

Any help on finding/loaning this tool will be appreciated.

Thanks.
