CLEAN THE HEX BEFORE YOU ATTEMPT TO INSERT ANY TOOL!!!

and yes, the 83 300D differential will have 14mm allen key plugs.
and most auto parts stores have a set of 3 large allen key sockets for 5.00 14/17/19 in the kit.

I got a set of hex key sockets from harbor freight a few years back for pretty cheap. I have found the best way to remove the fill plug is to drive the car on the highway and get the pumpkin nice and hot and then the bolt will come out somewhat easier.

WEll, borrowed the tool from my nieghbor, with a pretty good sized ratchet. Problem is getting it started from the ground position. Pulled out the jack, and the base was sinking into the rock and sand, so have to drag a cement flagstone there and try again tomorrow or this weekend. Once I get it going, I know it will go well, or I may take the whole plate off and change the leaking gasket, and put the cover on a vicegrip, and remove the plug on the bench. That might prove easier.

NOOOOO!!!!

don't attempt to remove it without the stability of being attached to the vehicle!

before you remove the drain or rear cover, you HAVE to get the fill plug out!

+1 This is mandatory. Of course it can be done various ways, but this is the best. Fill plug first.

Could not get at it with the wrench I had, because I could not lift the car up with my jack . . . only dug a hole in the sand, rather than lift the car . .. and the ratchet was too long. Thought i was running on empty cause the rear end was found to have a small drip. Got a local to put on lift for $10 and we removed the plug, and topped off. Best $10 I ever spent. I'll deal with changing the gasket next week after I track one down or have one shipped to me.

That plate doesnt have a gasket, its just sealed with permatex sealant.

Sure it isnt the input seal ring, or the 2 output seal rings leaking?

WEll, it's probably a new leak, and the level was low by a couple of ounces. There are gaskets for sale through the auto parts stores that look like they fit. I was thinking of the old cereal box trick with pematex . . . save myself the shipping costs. Will watch it for a bit after I clean the undercarriage to make sure that's where it's coming from.

I wouldn't bother with the cereal packet.

If you clean up the surfaces and make sure there isn't any damage then you shouldn't have any problem.

Make sure you follow the instructions on the sealant's packet - so de-grease and wait for the full curing time before filling the differential with oil.
