Well, for me the 4 cylinder is a great starting engine to work on. But, as time progresses and i get more experienced I might think about about switching over to the 5 Cylinder engine. Anyways back to the original question, can you guys link me to a source about swapping transmissions.

OH yesss, the addition of the 240D front springs. forgot about that.

I had that problem with mt 85 300D when I installed the 4-spd manual transmission. the 4-spd weighs far less than the automatic. the nose of the car was sitting high, and sort of threw out the geometry of the suspention and made the car wonder on the highway. made an interesting trip driving up to Portland, Or, 700+ miles and back.

Installed a set of 240D front springs and rides much better, really dropped the front end.

There are more, this is a start.

Thank you everyone for your answers. I respect, and understand that everyone has their own opinion about the engine they like. I might look into a 5 cylinder, thank you

If you do go with the 616 and four speed, make sure you change the third members. The station wagon will have a taller gear which will make it even MORE gutless.

Good luck with it.

well, the 5 cylinder turbo engine has a more complicated oiling system, and a different oil pump driven from a chain versus the shaft like yours is, and that's more complicated, also REBUILDING the turbo 5 cylinder is much more expensive than a 240, due to the turbo pistons, and the oil squirters and such...

Welcome to the forum, the manual swap has been covered MANY times on this forum, you will have plenty of information to read on it here!

one thing electronic annoying wise on the 5 cylinder versus the 4 cylinder CARS is the climate control. the 240 has a manual hvac control where all versions of the 300 chassis have electronic manipulation. be sure that is not something the mechanic was talking about... if so, you will need to swap ALL THAT stuff over to the wagon for the conversion to eliminate electronics...

I've got an 85 TD EURO with manual controls and I'm going to pull it ALL out and save it for one of my cars, or maybe to sell... I've not decided yet. either way, and whatever you choose to do with your car, TAKE pictures, and post them and your questions here!!!

Perhaps the mechanic can't count or read well and it was the SIX cylinder motor that he wanted to diss? -CTH
