'84 300sd First step in rear end sag repair

Hi all,

I have what seems to be pretty typical rear end sag (the car, not me ). It's at least 1-2", enough that the rear wheels are noticeably cambered out. I do have about 70# or so of tools/crap in the truck, but even when empty it is noticeable. I have read about the diff mounts (my car does rock significantly when shifting from D to R, and vice versa), and subframe mounts and springs. Where is a good place to start, and how do I best check? I have looked at my diff mount, and it shows a little notching, but not as extreme as I have seen in pictures. Any tips?

just went through this on my 84 300d- for same reason-replaced diff mount, subframe mounts, control arm bushings, replaced 1 tab spring tabs with 2 tab spring pads.

now sits at stock spec. height when unloaded. Still dissapointed when I have full tank of diesel and veggie in back it still squats and cambers out back wheels. Thinking of going to stiffer springs for extra weight, and I pull a trailer sometimes that really squats it down.

The SD suffered the same condition.

The solution was as follows:

New diff mount
One nub FRONT pads (8mm) above the spring
Four nub REAR pads (23mm) above the spring.


The SD sits high in the rear with no fuel and no weight in the trunk.

It sits dead level with full fuel and about 75 lb. in the trunk.


I'm quite convinced that these vehicles had way too much height in the front as delivered. This compounds the problem in the rear.

Note that I had to go to the very limits of the pads on both front and rear to achieve the perfect result. This might be the partial result of some slight compression of the rear springs over time, but I haven't confirmed it.

hello Jack,

My 190 was also a bit low at the back, so I replaced the pads and put the thickest possible (3 tabs for the W201). It improved the situation.

I have attached a link showing what I did. Sorry it is spanish, but at least you get to see the photos to get an idea of the process involved.

Thanks, folks. Replacing the pads looks significantly easier than changing the subframe mounts. I'll certainly give that a try first.

I can never fathom why the subframe mounts are suggested to cure a ride height issue. When fully flattened, they crush not more than 1/2". The fact that they are at the very forward end of the subframe will further minimize the effect of that 1/2".

I changed them on the SDL...........didn't do a damn thing that I could see.

The diff mount can get you 3/4" if it's fully compressed.

Typically the rear end will level when you replace this group of parts.

Rubber mounting, axle housing to frame floor unit, rear.

I replaced the coil spring pads on my 84 300SD about a week ago with the thickest Phil had, the 19mm ones. The shims, and new shocks, raised the rear of my car at least 1", probably more. The coil spring pads were cheap, less than $10 each, and have made a big difference so far. I think I will change my rear diff mount next as well, but I would suggest the new coil spring pads first and go from there.

Edited: The only 23mm pads available are for the FRONT springs. Max on the rear are the three nub 19mm pads.
