Even in these times wear pants with deep pockets. Some of those cars are going to still comand a fair dollar. Some as already mentioned look very good.

The envelope please . . .
Results: The 1912 Mercedes 28/50 PS Town Car sold for US$253,000, about what the auctioneers thought it would bring. It was the second-highest sale at that auction. OTOH, the French steam car, considered the oldest operating motor car in the world, the 1884 De Dion Bouton Et Trepardoux Dos-A-Dos Steam Runabout, sold for US$4,620,000, twice the pre-sale estimate. Apparently some folks still have money.

Some folks have $4.6M less.
Is that the same De Dion as in the rear suspension configuration? Sixto 87 300D |

De Dion, et cetera
Probably. De Dion was a wealthy French businessman. His start in motorcars (according to the auction brochure) came when he was shopping for mechanical toys to give out at a party. He liked a little steam engine and asked about it; the sale staff sent him out back where the two mechanics, Bouton and Trepardoux, were making a few pennies grinding out these toys. De Dion hired them away to build him a non-toy car, the result of which just sold in the auction. De Dion wasn't himself an inventor so most of the stuff carrying his name probably was built by someone else financed by De Dion.
Incidentally, my grandfather, a rural mail carrier in Minnesota, had a Ford snowmobile like the one (#115) in the auction [it went for $27,500]. Although the family story was that he "invented" it, it was probably a kit. Byrd took something very similar to Little America in 1929. Alas, they weren't diesels. Jeremy ![]()

It went for $253,000. Thats definately nothing to sneeze at. Still a lot more than most of us could afford no matter how much we may have wished we could have it.
