Question Turbo Rebuild Kit?

Hi all,

I have noticed that another site (Mercede$$ource) is offering a turbo rebuild kit and instructions for the Garrett for $100.

Is it possible for a hobbyist to do this job right?

My local diesel shop I believe charges $900 for this service. Wondering what may be missing.

Has anyone used this kit?

dd

There are those kits on ebay every now & again for less than that.
It depends what you get in the kit & what the problem was with your turbo. $900 is a bit over the top for a turbo rebuild unless many extra parts were needed.

Here is a site with plenty of pics and instructions to rebuild the Garrett turbo: T3 Turbo Rebuild Part 1 - DSM Forums

I've never done a rebuild myself but there are folks, here on the forum, that have mentioned how easy of a job this is. It's likely that several factors are involved as to the quality of the original core. I've seen several posts of oil consumption and mild play of the center shaft but if it's to the point of roaring, you may be to the point of looking for a salvage unit.

Most of the posts I've seen mention rebuilds by a shop ~$300-350 range. However, hi-speed balancing and other factors are likely not part of that.

Is there a specific symptom that you feel the turbo needs rebuilding?

My turbo(s) are fine right now, this is more for curiosity and future needs.

I rarely, rarely hear of turbos being a failure point on these vehicles.

Somewhere in the below links there is info as to where to get the US made kits and you send your Turbing Wheel and Shaft to him to be cleaned and balanced.

I have read more than a few T3 rebuild info on several Forums and they cannot agree as to what to torque the Shaft Nut to.

And none of them have any info on Bearing clearances or shaft end play.

Also on the Turbine end the Piston Ring type Seal rides in a groove on the Turbine. The sides of the Groove wear and if worn enough can cause a continued Oil leak.

It might be better to say that what you are doing is a resealing job than a Rebuilding Job.

I recently tore down my holset. Old t3 cant be harder, just make sure you mark the compressor wheel in relation to the shaft for reassembly (make sure you keep it balanced)/

what winmutt said.

I rebuilt mine with an ebay kit. I ordered 2 of them before I got the correct one. there are some differences in the T3 construction over the years. The first kit I ordered was $65 and was advertised as a "Mercedes diesel T3 turbo kit" after taking apart my turbo and saw the parts I needed to change I saw that the kit was not correct. I searched ebay again and found a kit with the correct parts for $25.

I fallowed these instructions.
T3 Turbo Rebuild Part 1 - DSM Forums

The parts are different as noted above, but you'll figure it out as you go, its not that hard. take pics, and mark the shaft and compressor wheel. I used red loctite on all the screws. I've got 9k on the new turbo thus far and no problems. somewhere I have pics of my rebuild, but can't locate them at the moment.

Oh the other problem I had was the compressor housing seal. the large orange o-ring in this pic

Both kits I received had larger o-rings. I measured the housing and ordered the correct one from McMaster-Carr... came in a 25 pack.

If you run into this problem send me a PM... I have 24 of these things somewhere in my garage.

Get the Numbers off the Tag on the Turbo

And call Garrett (Themselves)
Or one of their Master Distributors.

That way you KNOW the Parts are all correct.

The rebuild kits are less than $70.

There's also something known as a "Cartridge" (NOT as inexpensively priced)
That has all the Center Moving Parts and Bushings,You just bolt on your OLD
Housings.[after sliding the shaft in,and affixing the compressor wheel]

The Newer Turbos have Roller Bearings (Quicker Spool Up) with or without
Liquid Cooling.

I've got a T3 rebuild kit which I never got around to using. I've since decided to retrofit a 2006 dodge sprinter turbo onto my OM617 (I'm still a long way from completing this though), so at some point I need to get this rebuild kit off my hands.

if I don't sell it before replacing the turbo, I'll probably sell my old turbo with the kit as a bundle.

I'll make a posting in the parts section.

EDIT: post made: http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/parts/305861-garrett-t3-turbo-rebuild-kit.html#post2798219
