Cleaning the Water Drains

Can anyone point me to some See-Spot-Run, Run-Spot-Run instructions for cleaning the water drains on my 92 300D? I looked at section 6030 of the FSM but....what do I do? Stick a wire through it? Blow compressed air?

Not even sure what some of the pics refer to....

Thanks so much!

Asking for clarity sake only.

I thought linking to another similar site to PP was discouraged?

I don't see anything to that effect under thread rules. I think what is discouraged, at least informally, is recommending parts suppliers other than Fastlane. But of course that's superfluous since we all only buy our parts from Fastlane, right?

I try to.

Regarding the link - I surely (I know, don't call me Shirely) don't know.

That's why I ask.

Good info on drain cleaning.

I will add that it's possible to clean the windshield drains on a 124 by working the hose loose from the "funnel" part of the drains. The battery side one has much more working room than the driver's side, but both can be done. Once you get the tube/hose loose at the top (bottom of the funnel) it is easier to rotoroot it with something like string trimmer line, or a small diameter flex grabber gizmo.

The sunroof drains can also be run through with string trimmer line.

Easy job

It's an easy job. From memory, just vacuum out, or take out by hand, all the debris. On the battery side, you might have to move the battery. Use a little whisk broom or again, just by hand, clean out the gulley so water can run free. If you need to take the pieces out, they come apart and snap back together easily.

Is it common for debris to get lodged down in the drain, requiring me to poke something down there? Or does the debris typically just accumulate at the drain opening? I'm sure it hasn't been done in a while, so want to make sure I do it right.

It is more often than not that the windshield drains will be plugged on an older car, if it has been parked outdoors with any sort of trees around. I had a heck of a time getting a clog out of the battery side drain on the 300E, it must have been there for years before I got the car. That's when I learned that the tube can be unhooked from the funnel and then you have much better access to clean it out using whatever means necessary...

Now I try to vacuum out debris before it gets wedged down in there. I also use a forceps to pick stuff out which has gotten down in there.

Rgds,
Chris W.

I know this is for a W123, but might help on your W123 sun roof drains.

Found a good sunroof drain cleaner
