Do they even make this combination ? I am not going to put it into a vehicle... I want to run stuff like a welder on a trailer with it....I think they have them in Europe... Greg

None of the 300D series were sold with standard transmissions in the US. The 240D had an optional 4 speed manual tranmission, but thats the 4 cyl engine. The 190D series also had an optional 5 speed manual transmission.
I have often thought about how much it would cost to import a 300 turbodiesel from Europe with a standard transmission. If I did, I would want a 5 speed, and I'm not sure they were made. The one on ebay can be found at: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=600916098 I emailed the guy, and this was a 4-speed. Hope this helps |

In the W123 series there were 5-speed and 4-speed 240D's and 300D's made and sold in the other than US markets. There were no 4 or 5-speed 300D Turbodiesels, or 300TD Turbodiesels made as for some reason these were only delivered with automatics. I do not have the ordering catalogs for the later W124 series, but I think the same product structure held, and manuals were the bread and butter of the production volume. It is too bad, as I would love to have my 98 E300D TurboDiesel equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission. Jim

I think that turbo engines and manual transmission make ROTTEN partners! Having had a SAAB manual, and an Isuzu auto and a ZX auto, and driven many buses with each, that is my opinion. Manual trannys only work well with the new quick spooling turbos.

Remember, this question is about finding a bolt on way to get multiple speeds out of a stationary 5cyl MB engine bolted to a trailer running a weldor, hydraulic pump, water pump, etc.... I won't be sitting up there shifting it like an amusement park ride...LOL...

If you could find a 300D that has a strong engine but no body and then find a 4 speed transmission then you could bolt the 2 together. There was one guy in here who did that in his 240D and the only problem he had was moving the transmission back to accomidate the 5 cyl. Since this isn't going in a car then you don't really have to worry about that.

Well I guess your one step ahead
If you can find a manual transmission then your set, it should just bolt right on.

Mercedes sold tons of trucks and vans around the world (207d, 307d, 407d, 508d, 608d etc) which had the 616 and 617 engines with manual transmissions. Some ended up in the US and Canada. I've got a Mercedes in the UK with the 616 and a 5 speed manual in a 20ft motorhome. It is quite amazing that an engine which is considered such a slowpoke in an automobile can be used to power a fairly large motothome but it works quite well.

For your purpose, you could bolt a 240D manual transmission to a 300D engine. You will need to remove the adapter plate from the four cylinder and bolt it to the five cylinder to mate the transmission to the engine.
This could be easily done for your application, but not easily converted in a car because it places the transmission in a different location necessitating different driveshaft length and other component location problems. Since you would not have that issue to deal with, your combination would be easy to fabricate. I beg you to take this approach, or even a four cylinder if it will pull your welder, rather than cannabalize one of the rare Euro 300D, manual transmission cars. Are you sure the four cylinder wouldn't pull the welder okay? Good luck, |
