So I went to the Dealer parts dept today...

I went to get the 2 o-rings for the oil filter shaft. It takes 2 of them. They only have 1 in stock So I take the one and order 5 more. I'll have two extra sets this way. I go to replace the one that they sold me and the o-ring looks very "flat" and is very hard, I pry on it with a screw driver and it crumbles apart. Guess they really needed replacing! Now, I have to wait for the the others to come in to change the second one. Oh, and $1.50 each! They don't call it the stealership for nothing

Oh, also on another note. I replaced the vacuum pump last night. The ABS light was coming on and sometimes the brakes felt "squishy" Now, no ABS light at all and the brakes feel good. So, I guess it need replacing after all. Still, have loud banging from under the valve cover, I think I'm going to order new lifters. When will it end? Calgon, take me away!

Napa nearby?

You could probably take that o-ring down to Home Depot even and find one that's close. And then just pull the canister lid out to swap in the correct one when it get in a few days later...

You can also get them from Fastlane here on the forum. With that kind of stuff I order it when I order other stuff. Or the local hardware store will have metric o-rings.

You are lucky; I was charged $2.50 each by my dealer when I ordered some several years ago (last time I bought stuff like that at the dealer).

Careful with hardware store o-rings, they may look OK but probably are not the correct [Metric] size and may also be intended for water, not hot oil. That's one of the last places you want to have not seal properly. Phil at Fastlane can get them for you and they support this forum.

There are probably other parts you know you need. Just do a little forward planning & that way your order will be big enough to avoid postage.

Be so careful with hardware store O rings. They are often not meant for oil or fuel applications.

Don't buy o rings in the plumbing section. Buy the metric size in the automotive marine section that are oil compatible.

I'm sure they are metric, but I just don't know the size. I just want to be sure they are exactly right.

Stealership?

Not always I've just bought some rubber seals for my W123 sunroof that were cheaper (way cheaper) at the dealer than at the Mercedes specialists...

I actually don't have a problem paying $1.50 or $2.50 for something like an o-ring from Mercedes, because it costs money for them to keep the inventory they do.

Try going into a Ford or GM dealer and asking for an o-ring for a car made in 1980s. My bud with a shop has issues getting parts for GMs made eight years ago, and I mean major components, not o-rings and such.

Honestly, these days I don't think any auto maker has consistently, reasonably priced parts. Everyone has something that makes you say "It costs WHAT?"

Thumbs up Zacharias Is Right!

I think that there isn't another automotive manufacturer out there that treats its "tinkering" customers with old cars like MBZ does. It is simply amazing that they provide us access to the Electronic Parts Catalog on-line for free and that we can just about order anything. It's the local dealers that choose not to carry products and parts and they set the final prices but we can still get almost anything. My son just obtained a 1979 Mustang and we went to the Ford dealer yesterday to ask about a front main seal and the dealership didn't even have his car listed in their system! ....... they couldn't even look up a single part number not even an oil filter! ..... and they sold something like 500,000 mustangs that year! MBZ is in league of their own when it comes to part catagorizing and availablity .... sure we pay for that from time to time with $2 o-rings and $200 fuel pumps ..... but it is worth it to fund the support they do provide us "tinkerers".

Some reading of DIYs could have saved you the experience.
I have posted the below comment maybe 7-8 times in the past, often with a pic of the Box they come in.

Autozone sells a Metric O-ring assortment made by Dorman for less than $8.
Dorman 172 piece O-ring Value Pack #799-450
In it are 24 of the 6mmIDx10mmODx2mmW O-rings that you need for the bottom of the Oil Filter Stem: enough for 12 Oil Filter Changes as you need 2 O-rings each time you change it.
The 10mmIDx17mmODx2.5mm in the kit fits the bottom of the Filter Bolt; you get 24 of those in the kit.The 14mmIDx19mmODx2.5mmW appears to fit the large upper O-ring (if you have the Filter Bolt that takes 2 O-rings) but I have not actually tried that yet.
You get a total of 172 O-rings in various sizes.

find a local supplier. Saves you lots and you ens up with a better item

I consider any o rings, washers and even hoses something I would never go to the dealership for. I get all my o rings and seals form a local place called "Bearing and Oil Seal Specialists" Or "B-O-S-S" They can identify and order any seal I may need. Much cheaper than any part store as they aren't held for specific vehicles or makes. How many parts are the same between Ford, GM and even Mercedes? It would probably astound you. My SD for instance has a GM R4 A/C compressor. I wonder what the Benz price is compared to the GM price compared to the jobber price? I also get all my hoses made up at a hydraulic shop. 4000psi trans cooler lines for $30, they make brake flex lines, a/c lines anything! Always less and made to order.
