Love to see how you did it ....you can get them out without a press, takes a BFH and some sweat (lot easier with a press however)....but pressing a new one in is a far different thing.

You use the proper tools of course. Rusty has a C clamp that looks like it could sustain 1000000000000000000psi before breaking. The C arm of it was like 2" solid steel.

it's actually more difficult to press them in, than to use the c-clamp. unless you have the HUGE installation tube.
ebay sells a cheapo tube adapter that fits around the spindle on the 123 to press in the ball joints, and there is a diy on here somewhere using it.
of course, dealers have the MB installation equipment most of us mere mortals have no access to...

In fact, the W123 Chassis Manual prescribes the hammer option for removal. But the W123 design poses challenges not common to the W201.

I've done them both ways....the ones I did with a hammer (2 1/2 lb) took a huge amount of effort to dislodge them, and I'm not a small guy. I have a fairly minimal hydraulic press setup (bought to press in a double roller bearing in a knuckle on another car) and still think that is more efficient.
