To the person who hit my car and ran

A**hole!

This damage used to be covered by "unsatisfied judgment" fund of motor vehicles division, but since 1997 and the reformed insurance act, vehicle damage to hit and run is no longer covered. Only bodily injury.

"If you want that kind of coverage, use your personal insurance plan."

Yet, our registration fees have never gone down. I guess uninsured bodily injury has gone way up in costs to the government.

I know I know a post like this without a picture isn't worth anything.

I just needed to vent.

Oh. I thought perhaps you were going to say something like "May you suddenly be gripped by a horrible pain that leaves you writhing on the ground in indescribable agony, as you slowly die!"

Happy Motoring, Mark

My neighbor's SVX got creamed one night as it was parked on the street. The thing was perfect but it's totaled now. I worry for my SDL, it might have to live on the street once it makes its way out here :S

I would think it falls under comprehensive.

That would depend on the definition of "it," which is vague at best.

When I filed an uninsured motorist claim for a hit and run I was told I needed either the offender's driver license or vehicle license plate. Otherwise there was no proof that it was caused by another motorist. Not even bits of broken tail light and a police report swayed them.

Thats hilarious, if you had the drivers license, it wouldn't be a hit and run. Hilarious in the sense of government idiocy.

Sorry to hear about your car. I've got some front fenders and a hood for a W124 let me know if you need anything. I've also got an E320 we could do a trunk or backcut off of if you need stuff.

The damage seems fairly minor, front bumper strip is scrunched where it wraps around the corner and got some black scuffs on bumper, which will probably rub out. Impact didn't reach the fender, no bent metal. The hit did cause the body fasteners to separate where the bumper runs along the fender. Don't know what lies behind the bumper, but I think the shocks took it all as they're supposed to.

No way could the driver have not known they made a hit. Not a tap. This was a crunch. Left white paint on my bumper strip.

OK, I admit this is the only time I wish I had a working car alarm that responds to shock. The noise may have been enough to draw attention (witnesses to look) so the driver would have stopped to put his details on a note fixed to my car.

But then I've also heard of people receiving false information on such slips of paper tucked under the wiper, so what looks like a respectable person doing the right thing is still running but in a way that puts witnesses at ease. At least you'd have a writing sample, if they ever did get the guy.

How about an in-car video camera running 24/7 to capture the comings and goings? One pointing out each window, front and back. Wide angle.

I have necessary parts off my spares... but thanks for the offer DieselPaul.

Switch insurance companies maybe?

Yea all the cameras would be a good idea, but only if you could angle them to see the licence plate, and that still might not work if they only have a tag on the back. Best guess is to hire an armed guard to watch your vehicle. That way if they try to make a run for it they could get plate number and shoot the person who did it, or at least their tires and car (though a tire will actually take over an hour to deflate if its not through-and-through).

Well I guess that makes sense... Maybe if it wasn't such a small thing you could have hired a lawyer and sued

It is hilarious, but I don't see how his insurance company's stupid policies are the government's fault. Nothing but the good old free market at work there -- the incentive for the insurer is to take in as much as they can in premiums, then structure the contract so they never actually have to pay settlements...
