85 W123 Tach Issue

I'm trying to fix my tach. It will work for a short time if the car has been sitting say for a week. I think I found the connector, directly in back of the engine on the firewall. Two "things" there, I think the one in front is the connector. I unplugged and with the engine running tried to see if I was getting any voltage at the female end of the connector, none, none on the male side either. I am thinking the sensor in the tranny went south. I was going to try to remove it, clean it and put it back in. Its turning out to be hard to get out. Am I wasting my time? Do these sensors just fail and need to be replaced, i.e. cleaning will do nothing for it, just replace it??

Thanks.

The sensor for the tach doesn`t connect into the transmission. It is attached to the adaptor plate on the drivers side. You might be able to see it looking down behind the oil filter housing. It held in with one small hex bolt.

It some how reads the rotation of the flywheel.

I think there are 2 connectors on the firewall. one for the speed sinsor, the other plug is for the Rack Position Sensor, the box on the rear of the Injection Pump which has nothing to do with the Tach. both connect into the black box behind the passenger foot area side panel.

Yup, this is the thing I was looking at. 5mm hex head holding it in place. The bolt seems very tight and I'm unable to get a good grip with my hex key. I'm going to try with a 1/4 inch drive and a 5mm hex Awkward spot but not impossible. I might try to clean it and re-install or probably just buy a new one and be done with it.

Thanks
