Removing Passenger side mirror glass

I purchased a replacement passenger side mirror for my 83 300TD. I just need the actual mirror replaced. How do you remove the glass?

Don't hold me to this on your car..
but on my 1980 123 it pops out with gently pressure from its holder... consult a manual before doing it though...

Really? Changing just the mirrored glass is hard to do? I thought the replacement mirror from another one wouldn't be so difficult

Does your glass have a plastic backing with a knob in the center ?
That is how mine was when I took it out trying to put in a wide view type... which would not fit ...

as I remember, the out side edge of the glass pops off, and the inner edge has 2 tangs that slip under something back inside. Just gently pry, and it will pop off.

I have pulled a few off at PNP. haven`t put any back on yet.

I thought all W123 door mirrors were the same. except for the coupe, 300CD/280E.

I`ll look in my FSM later this afternoon, need to leave here in a few min.

FSM chapter 72-270 says

"Pry glass out of ball socket with a plastic wedge and pull it out to one side"

Sorry - you're one up on me though having actually done it.

Have you ever taken the whole assembly apart before? I mean more than just the mirror...

I have removed the mirrors from the door of several cars in the junk yard. and added one to the pass door of the 240D. (Didn`t have one)

I read in the FSM on how to do it, and used a PNP car for my trial and error. I havent` reinstalled a mirror back into the mirror head, or taken the mirror head apart.

I wish I had a set of W126 FSM`s. I pulled a few mirrors from the 126, and they are mounted inside the head a little differently. They pry off, but in the center of the mirror is a round plastic piece, and the mirror head has to other round part. they snap together. there is also a springy wire around to keep it tight. I broke a couple trying to get them off, not the mirror, but the inner plastic. the round part is maybe 2 1/2in across.

there were a few that had a wire attached, maybe for the heated mirror. I pulled a few W201 and W124 also. Just practicing .

Yeah I was thinking about "going in deep" - you know more of a restoration job. My w123 door mirrors look like they're assembled with those sort of click connections which always get the alarm bell ringing for me as when ever you try and unclick things you can sometimes end up busting them.
