need help locating a thread: Om617 swapped into a w116 gasser?

Does anyone remember this thread? I can't remember where it was, or what keywords to use in it.

I believe it was an SDL. Try searching on 116 SDL diesel.

Good call Kerry...thanks - found it.

There's a nice 450 sel for sale nearby.....a 1980 that won't start, even thought the fuel system has been cleaned and purged, new sending unit, pump, filter, etc.

Thinking of picking it up as my 300sd is falling apart around me.

While I'm at it...anyone have any suggestions on why the rig might not be starting?

Quote:
it will not start and I believe its a fuel delivery problem as it will start briefly if ether is sprayed into the intake, so it does have spark. The entire fuel system has been renewed as it sat for about 3 years with a 1/4 tank of gas in it. The tank has been relined with epoxy, the injectors and fuel system were professionally flushed and it has a brand new sending unit, pump and filter.

I recall something about the injection system having breaker points like an old distributor and these frequently being the source of problems. The vintage board would have more experienced folks for that knowledge.

A 450 SEL is a pretty nice car. If you can handle the relatively bad gas mileage you might want to fix it up and drive it as is.

No, you are talking about D-Jetronic (the very earliest Bosch electronic injection system) and that was only in the very early years. It had contact points in the distributor, which fired the injectors by bank.

A 1980 I THINK will have CIS but my gasser w116 knowledge is pretty rusty. If it is CIS, I seem to recall that the fuel distributors weren't happy if left sitting for extended periods of time.
