Stuck front wheel bearing, 123.153

I'm in the process of replacing the front rotors and have gotten the clamping nut off, but the bearing is not coming out.

I think I may be able to remove it along with the rotor/hub, yet I believe I'll need a special tool, as my gear puller doesn't line up with the lug holes.

I have a request in the tool rental section.

Has anyone come across this?

Remove the caliper and try again.

Are you saying you can't just slide the rotor/hub right off?

Correct, the bearing is stuck inside, not allowing the rotor/hub to be removed.

The manual doesn't cover this, as the bearing is supposed to be held in with the clamp nut.

I like to use a hammer in that situation or a rubber mallet if you want to save the rotor.

That is unusual - have you got a flywheel puller large enough to reach the wheel bolt holes?

It could be a stubborn grease seal holding it all in place or worse a very rusty wheel bearing...

Puller? Why not whack the back side of the disc with a hammer or mallet?

I don't like to whack stuff with hammers - I still don't know my own strength and often cause more mayhem than was necessary.

If I were to hit something - I'd wedge a block of wood between the disc and the suspension and then hit the wood.

If you don't like to whacking hammers, you can alway get a couple of long bolts, some washers and a couple of nuts, and use the bolts as a press through the caliper mount bolt holes to move the disc outward.

Mount the wheel back on, drive around the block, it will definately come off.

JUST KIDDING, JUST KIDDING..

sounds like the grease seal is holding it, like there is a suction between it and the back end of the spindle with the grease. If this makes sence. I have had them do that once in a while, just gotta get mean with it.

I have tried the mallet whack with a piece of 2x2 on various places, no dice.

I'm going to try and rig up a hub puller, I have an extra wheel.

poor mans hub puller

I have often used a length of chain, say about 2 ft long. Put each end of the chain over opposing wheel studs, wind lug nuts tight against chain links and put a heavy bar into the loop of chain. Start with the bar up against the hub and jerk it sharply back against the chain. Works every time

If the bearing is seized to the spindle, you might be able to break it loose by overtorquing the spindle nut. No special tools required.

how does the outer bearing look? is it BLUE from heat? can you see the cage? is there a washer on it? sometimes the washer gets stuck in a slot/groove. pushing it on and off with opposing force will sometimes get it out.
likely one or more of the bearings have welded themselves to the spindle.
if it causes much more fuss, I'd be heading to a parts yard and snagging a spindle... any 123/126 will work.
