Spotted a leaky upper radiator hose when the engine was running and grabbed a screwdriver to tighten the hose clamp. As I tightened the clamp, my hand rotated into the spinning fan blades and got it smacked silly...

The little scar around near the knuckle still brings a sheepish smile to my face, and reminds me to turn off the engine before working.

turbo'd a 240d.... went 160 in a trans am... drank a fifth of everclear in a night... stuffed my hand in more fan blades/alt fins than i can count, dropped a s10 on myself, carried 350 blocks, sat on my hood when my wench controller broke and winched myself out, ran out of gas playing in my backyard but was to drunk to realize and destroyed a bran new battery and burnt out a winch motor, welded near a container of oil/misc which blew up and burned me pretty good, aired up a 40' super swamper with ether and a lighter (ended up blowing it past the beed and knocking myself over to everyones amusement), took my trusty k5 and put 40's on it which doomed it to a early grave... i should probably stop now im only 24 and this all sounds kinda bad...

Stupid things we did in the past, huh? Hmmm... Crack, that was fairly dumb. Actually, I don't have the patience to type all the dumb stuff I did before say 25 or so. My most brilliant move in the last few years was cutting cookies on the beach with a really low tide and... well, the picture should sum it up:
For perspective, the tall guy is about 6'6". The truck was buried to the axles. We spent all night trying to get it out, burned up a winch, etc... The wrecker that finally pulled it out needed about 400 feet of cable so he could work from solid ground. As soon as the truck was pulled free of the mud it popped up and floated.

I mentioned that I never took a round... but it was dramatic than that.. a charmed tour.... here is a link to an Army publication

...the last story is about my roommate Larry Willett at BearCat... notice in the second column where he mentions an operation where " every aircraft ( flight of 16 ) took rounds except one ". That was me..... chalk four... and chalk three took a large hit and had fuel pouring out of its side... so I stayed in the LZ after the main flight took off so that crew could grab their radios and climb into my ship.
No wonder I thought I was immune from such 'minor dangers' as motorcycles...
Nope: Central highlands out of Pleiku then An Khay. 4th Infantry Division. Most interesting - LRRP team with the Montgnards.
Would have been an interesting coincidence if we had met before.

Took all my friends out for a cruise

In my 37ft converted school bus , 283 4spd. Parked it in the Spanish banks parking lot. Came back a couple hours later had left the lites on. Wouldn't start so I made everyone (10 folks or so) get out and push start it. Back to the end of the parking lot to get some room then forward till I dumped the clutch. No Start I had forgotten to switch the ign ON. so they had to do it again. They were pissed but it did start. Cheers Dan

Yeah, I'm with ya all the way to when I, too busy chatting to my buddy to pay attention, missed the clamp with the driver bit and instead bumped another (no 3 philips long) driver that had been sitting precarioiusly on the rad support down into the OM617 fan.

I just barely saw the screwdriver as it launched like a missile upwards, about an inch from my left eye. My buddy saw the whole thing, went white as a sheet.

1986 my first do-it-yourself oil change. Had to get special permission from the apartment complex manager to do it in the parking lot. Yeah, do you really think I remembered to put the drain plug back in -- before I had poured in about 4 quarts?

Working late at night outside my rental shop bay, no one else around, middle of nowhere industrial park. Have an starter interlock electrical fault in the old Volvo Turbo I had just picked up. Lying with my shoulders inside the car, turning the key back and forth, moving the clutch with my hand. Fiddle connection-clutch-turn key... over and over... until I forgot the clutch part.

I woke up an hour or so later. The car dragged me into pile of scrap metal, where I got pulled out. It continued across the parking lot and pushed a Honda into a ditch. Cost me $400 to repair the Honda.

I am sure it is not the kind of thing you are looking for, but the dumbest thing I ever did was to marry my high school sweetheart while still in college.

If this serves as a warning to anyone in college, I will consider this post as my greatest post on the internet.

Not on a car, but stupid nonetheless.

I was replacing the hydraulic pump on a Massey Ferguson tractor and had it running to see if I had the PTO lever engaged correctly on the gear shaft. I was looking over the rear end to see if it was turning by actuating the clutch by hand. Somehow I bumped the shift lever into gear and when I released the clutch the tractor took off, knocking me down and running up and over my body breaking my hip and arm. It also knocked a 5 gallon pail of gear oil all over me while I lay on the barn floor. To this day I can't stand the smell of 90 weight.

If my daughter hadn't jumped up and stopped it, the Massey would still be on its way to Steubenville.

I know of no one that likes the smell of 90 weight...

ya know... leaving the oil fill cap from a 92 chevy diesel on the radiator during testing and such after changing glow plugs and such gets REALLY expensive when it drops into the fan shroud and interferes with the radiator etc...

not that I admit to making that mistake...
