If the Head is OK why remove the Precombustion Chambers?

I used a bracket bought at a hardware store. Measure the slot to get the right size. Loose fit is OK. May have been 1/4" thick, 2' long, 90 degree bend in middle. Flat steel.

The shop can press the chambers out after the collars are removed.

603 doesnt have collars. You use a spare injector body and a slide hammer to remove the prechamber.

When it was time to insall the Collars how did you Torque them properly with the Bracket?

I am not sure when the change was made from the slotted Prechamber Retaining Collar/Ring to the Splined Retaining Collar but, there is a Collar/Ring retaing the Prechambers.

I am interested to see how the PO plans to get the job done with out the proper tools or making something that works.

Wierd. You are right. For some reason I didnt think one was needed. The change is between the vertical and angular injectors. It appears the vertical one uses the same tool as the 61x engines.

Tightened the collars using the bracket by feel. Would have rather used the correct tool. But it was quick and it worked with no downside.

What is more important is that the head height should be measured after machining and the pre chamber projection be correct. They can be shimmed to adjust. A thicker head gasket is available, if needed.

prechamber

win, better have a contract on the loan out, maybe a few cases beer,if the slotted collar is too tough it will distort the tool. i had some from hitmans #18 head that i had to install threaded rod same size as injector, weld to collar and remove with 1/2 in impact.
also i dont think it is a good idea to try and push the prechamber out,i have seen some that had the holes distorted from others trying to bypass the slide hammer.
from what i have seen, the collar change came with the 124 2.5 and the 126 3.5

A 14 head should have the slotted ones, splined ones are inclined injection (later) heads.

Pre-Chamber-Piston Match???

I have a 1987 300TD, 603 engine. The #14 head cracked and I installed a rebuilt #17 head from a later 603 engine. I have not driven it yet. The original head had vertical pre-chambers but the new head has the angled pre-chambers and uses the later style injectors. In the MB data it states that these angled pre-chambers are rotated 180 degrees from the previous vertical ones. This would mean, it seems to me, that the 6 "fire holes" in the pre-chamber tips will now be directing the flames in a pattern rotated 180 degrees from the previous head. The pistons crowns have grooves forming a sort of star shape that seems to correspond to the flame pattern from the pre-chambers. SO... did MB change the pistons in later 603 engines to match the 180 degree rotation of the pre-chambers???? Will my new #17 head with angled and rotated pre-chambers therefore not correctly match my pistons????
