How to tell a OM603 3.0L from a 3.5L?

Anyone have any tips on how to tell a OM603 3.0L from a 3.5L? I am looking at a 93 300SD that had the engine swapped, possibly to a 3.0L, but we do not know for sure.

Is the head the same casting number of the two engines? It definitely has a "22" head on it.

Any and all help is certainly appreciated!

Thanks.
Charles

22 is the latest casting from MB, and it's equally possible to be installed on a 603 3.0 or 3.5 you would have to find numbers on the block itself. I do not know where you would look though.

A 3 is a 96x while a 3.5 is a 97x. Look on top of the block just aft of the water outlet to the radiator.

On the reman .970 in my car that flange has no markings on it. There is this tag on the bellhousing, though:

No number on this one either. Where on the bell housing is that tag located? We could not see anything when we looked today.

That bell housing tag is a reman engine tag. If original, it'll have a paper VIN sticker on top of the bellhousing flange on the rear of the block.

The easiest place to find the numbers is on the top of the block, where the block sticks out on the driver's side under the fuel filter mount. It is stamped into the iron block there.

I should have been more clear. This engine has no number on the milled area in front of the injection pump, which from a previous post sounds like it may be normal for a reman engine. The paper tag is there, but illegible. Anything else to look for? Where is the aluminum tag shown in the previous post located?

Thanks again.
